I am trying to put a movie on DVD-R. It's mpeg-II size is 2.9G (KDVD template), yet when trying to convert it to VOB for burning it gets resized to about 5.8G! I redid it using KVCDx3 (Mpeg-II) and get messages saying it isn't compliant for DVD conversion. I have tried Ulead VideoStudio 6 and Cyberlink PowerDirector 2. Anybody know of any settings I might change or should I change software for the conversion to VOB? I understand I can record on CD-R as SVCD using KVCDx3, but that means I don't really need my DVR-104, so I would really like to place my stuff on DVD. Any help appreciated.

Not sure about Ulead, but I use DVDiT and the KDVD Full templates, I just completed Casino a 178 Min movie, the total file size came out at 3.4 GB. One thing you should try to do is convert the audio, with DVDiT I convert the audio to 192 Bit Rate and Dual Stereo, this will make a small file. I have been able to put as many as three movies on one DVD-R with the KVCD SVCD Templates. I have a Panasonic LFD 321 Burner. So you may want to look at the audio first. Good Luck, hopefuly someone with a little more knowledge of Ulead can also help.

Aloha

Sounds like your authoring app is converting your audio to PCM or trying to reencode your video. I'm not familiar with the apps that you are using so I can't be sure .........

When you say "make image" or whatever it's called in your app, how long does it take ?

Can't say I remember how long it takes, but I agree that some kind of reencoding seems to be happening. That's part of my frustration since the KDVD template is suposed to be fully DVD compliant.

I know what you mean BKL .
The problem is that many DVD authoring programs insist on re-encoding audio. Most of them do just that.
If you try the original DVD templates that come with TMPEG, you'll get the same results with many DVD authoring programs, even though the mpegs created are 100% DVD compliant. Just like with the KDVDs.

In this thread ...
http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=783

I show how to get Ulead DVD Workshop to author DVD's with AC3 tracks ....

My point is that with DWS, it can be made to "shut up & take it" when it comes to your Mpgs.

Using ver 1.2, you purposely choose the highest quality from the "Make Disc" option on the Finish menu.

On that screen you will find a check box that says "Do not convert compliant file", meaning your moovys .

With this, DWS will not molest your Mpegs ... It will still have to Mux them into VOB files, but will otherwise not reencode them ....

Since I was able to get this to work, I have not ventured beyond DWS.

I use the KDVD templates exclusively and couldn't be happier.

At full D1 I'm getting two full 2 hour movies complete with thier original 448kbs AC3 audio ......

At half D1 I can get 6 hours with the same audio ....

Very kewl ....

Thanks, After reading your earlier post, I downloaded the trial version of ULead DVD Workshop and noticed it has the 'Don't reencode compliant files' button. I will check it when I get home from work tonight.

Using the DVD Workshop trial download I was able to successfully place the KVCD file onto DVD. Looks like I will need to fork over some bucks for the real thing or its equivalent.
