Closed Captions on VCD ?
Has anyone ever been able to find a way to do this :?:
It IS defined in the VCD 2.0 specifications, but I can't seem to find any references as to the actual protocol of the data that has to be put in the EXT folder on the VCD CD-R structure. My idea was to take the standard subtitles of my DVD and write a program to convert the text subtitles to closed caption format ( whatever the format is). Then I can have "pseudo" switcheable subtitles  -kwag |
What a good news, I am really looking for to seeing that happen. Thanks again, Kwag!

There's a program called CCParser you can find at doom9.org It's for extracting CC as bmps I think.
Maybe you could e-mail the author for some info on the subject. BTW since my player handles SVCD, I just mux my mpeg-1 LBR files as SVCD, then I use WinSubMux and it works OK. |

Thanks for that link GFR. What I still can't find is what is the actual format to write on the file "CAPTnn.DAT" where nn is the track numbet, etc. That is what I can't even find in the VCD specifications 8O . I guess I'll just have to extract a raw CC data with graphedit or something, and add this file to the EXT directory somehow.

Look what I found :D
http://www.icdia.org/sw_pc/vcdtools.html Edit: Never mind. It's the old Philips toolkit :x -kwag |
I've been trying to dig out some info on this for a while also.
The only thing that I think may work is the scenarist closed caption tools. Info : http://www.sonic.net/~mcpoodle/SCC_T...SCC_TOOLS.HTML Software: http://www.sonic.net/~mcpoodle/SCC_TOOLS/SCC_TOOLS.ZIP It seems that theres no easy way of getting from subtitle to CC without a manually editing all the captions using the disassembly format (which equates to hours of frustration :x ). I will continue to search for more info but from most of the stuff I've found it looks like you need to strip the CC signal from the source (via video capture) and convert it to the CC format for VCD. This software can convert to the VCD format from the raw format but thats probably the most trickiest part. Hope this helps! |

If you can get the raw CC's via graphedit, then this software may do the trick. I haven't used graphedit in anger yet so it would be good if someone could try it to see if this will work. Cheers. Fiz |
We can get CC to subs with "DoItFast4U!"
http://members.cox.net/doitfast4u But it's a hell of a job to convert the CC to subs :x -kwag |

According to the scenarist software, it is possible to convert from CC raw format to the VCD specification CAPTnn.DAT file. If this is the case, then it should be possible to rip the raw CC data from a DVD (which has CC) and then use this software to convert it to the VCD 2.0 format (which as far as I can see is also like a raw binary file). Sorry if I'm being plane stupid. |

Thanks, -kwag |
http://www.sonic.net/~mcpoodle/SCC_T...S.HTML#scc2raw
this should be the link. the software can be downloaded from the top of that page. If it works then it could be the icing on the cake for KVCD :) . I'll try out as well later tonight when I get home. Now that I know how to extract the raw CC from the source. :P Quote:

From the link above:
"Once you have a caption file in raw format, you give it a name to match the MPEG file it is to accompany. For example, the closed caption file for AVSEQ01.DAT is CAPT01.DAT, the caption file for AVSEQ02.DAT is CAPT02.DAT, and so on. All caption files are placed in the EXT directory (for VCDEasy, for example, you'd add the caption files in the ISO Files screen)." And that's exactly what I have been trying to do, but I didn't know what format the CAPTxx.dat would be. So I guess the RAW is the format. If this works, then we can even convert regular subs to CC and then to RAW, and we can have switcheable subs on our KVCDs   On to test.... :D -kwag |
DAMN DAMN :!: :!: VCDEasy won't let me put the file CAPT02.DAT in the EXT folder
Any suggestions :?: Maybe creating the .bin/.cue and mounting it and somehow making it read/write and THEN pasting the CC file in the EXT folder :?: I think ISOBUSTER is what I need :!: More to test.... -kwag |

If you use Nero, it does allow the EXT folder to be added to but then I guess you won't get chapters. :( Probably worth trying for test purposes.
Must admit, I haven't used ISO Buster but another possibility (long shot) could be to mount the cue/bin with Daemon tools. Then using Nero, create a new Mode2 ISO image and drag all the folders from the emulated drive to the nero image. Then drag the CAPT02.dat into the EXT folder and burn. This may even be able to retain the chapters entry points. :?: Bit stuck at the moment because I am at work but may try this later at home. |
