Can you burn MPG-1 to DVD-R and play?
 

Maybe this is a stupid question. I got several movie burnt with KVCD template and they are great. I'm thinking of buying a DVD burner, will I be able to take my MPG-1 and burn it on DVD without re-encoding them to MPG-2 and still be able to watch them on stand alone players? Will DVD burner burn MPG-1 to DVD at all?

MPEG-1 specs on DVD are very strict. The resolution can't be greater than 352x240(288) and the bit rate has to be within some specified parameters. If you want to encode for future DVD compliance, I suggest you encode with SKVCD templates and just change the GOP MAX number of frames to 18 (15 for PAL). That will make a half D-1 resolution 352x480(576) mpeg file, compatible with DVD specs. For the audio, you'll have to re-encode at 48Khz.

Thanks, Kwag. Here is another question: DVD players play VCD (CD-R), some even play mpg files (like my Mintek 1600) on CD-R. Since mpg files are burnt as data CD, if you take the dat file on VCD and burn as data file to DVD, will you still be able to play off from that dat file like you would with mpg files? (I can't try that because I don't have a DVD burner) I wonder if my Mintek read DVD disc the same way as CD-R if they all have mpg (or dat) files on it? 8O

I found the answer to my own question: http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcddvdr.htm This is what I was talking about puting VCD on DVD without re-encoding again. Well, at least not all of it but just the audio part. The bad news is that it does NOT work with 23.976fps, which all of my KVCDs are since I used Force Film in DVD2AVI. :cry:

Anyway, at least now I know it does work except for 23.976fps. I wonder why not though?

BTW: You might be able to fool the DVD player by running the program "pulldown.exe" on your demuxed video file. Then re-mux back with your 48Khz audio. This way, it appears as 29.97fps, when it's actually 23.976 :wink:
