My player will not play svcd unless the header trick is applied.. and since svcd's are mpeg2.. well...

My question is:
If I use use the KVCDx3 MPEG2 template, should I apply the header trick prior to burning since it's a mpeg2 so that it will play on my standalone?

If you can't play SVCDs without the header trick, then don't use the SVCD templates at all. All the normal KVCD templates generate mpeg1 (VCD) files, not mpeg2...

I've noticed that the header trick will result in desync'd audio depending on your DVD player, sadly. Hooray for KVCDs to eliminate the need for mpeg2 :)

Yes, usually I do mpeg1, but the KVCDx3 templates offer choice of mpeg1 or mpeg2..

The reason I went mpeg2 as opposed to mpeg1 is because it is my understanding that mpeg2 is the better quality.. is this not correct? - or am I not considering some factors?

My player (Aiki DVPS-760) plays SVCD perfectly with the header trick, usually I just use kwags templates to burn to 1 cd, but in this case with the movie Minority Report which is 2 1/2 hours long, I decided to try the KVCDx3 template Mpeg2, but with a 480x480 resolution because mine seems to accept it better.
I've already converted it, but haven't actually burned it to cd yet because I don't know if I should use the header trick or not.. (I'm getting tired of wasting cds with experimentation!!! - yeah, I know they are cheap, but it adds up!)

You'll get slightly better quality with MPEG-1 than with MPEG-2, specially at the low bit rates we use here :wink:
But if you get better results with MPEG-2 in your player, then by all means, switch :!:

I didn't say I get better results with mpeg2 - what I meant was I get better results with 480x480 resolution size as opposed to 528x480 with my player.

The only mpeg2's I done have been a few svcd's (2 to be exact) .. so I don't neccesasrily really know if I get "better" quality mpeg2.. I only assumed this because it seems I have read in foroms that mpeg2's are always the better quality..
And also since svcd is mpeg2 (the higher quality of standard conversions)

But since your telling me that mpeg1 is the better way with your templates - and you seem to be the video cd god - :!: then I wont go mpeg2 at all!

Oh, by the way... speaking of this template...

I posted this info about a week ago but I think that it was misunderstood as saying the templates don't work.. what I meant was the "sample" downloads don't work.

Yes, the site where the samples were posted is not active anymore. Right now most samples are scattered here in the forum, specially in the "Crap" thread :D Those are the latest :wink:

One last question.. In one of your older post you provided a link for bin cue files that contained sample conversions of all your templates for burning to one "test cd" - however that link was outdated..

Do you currently have a single file download that includes sample burns of you updated templates? - That would be ideal!

I don't have any ISO image sample from our latest findings. When things stabilize a little, I'll make another test ISO image with samples at every resolution. I just have a feeling that we're still not done with the removal of visible low frequency DCT blocks :wink:
