easier way to insert the chapters in VCDs?
I couldn't do it with KVCD. But after sleepless nights <and believe me i had vacation last week and didn't sleep for 3 days straight trying to encode Barbershop>. After several pm's with Kwag and reading the guides, and going to VCDHelp and Doom9, I was able to learn more about bitrates and so on and so forth.
I downloaded several different files <thanks BlackPrince>. Because of this I have been able to do the following movies. Barbershop - done with dvd2vcd Kings of Comedy - Originally a divix, and I used tempgenc to do the video and audio <both done separately> and used BBMpeg. Bourne Identity-dvd2vcd I am now working on Ballistic. All of my vcd's have chapters, which was made really easy with VCDEasy. I even inserted a MPEG still and placed it before the movie. My mom got a kick out of that when she saw her grandson on her Babershop vcd. 1 question though, is there an easier way to insert the chapters, to simulate those of the dvd? -Semper Fi Wil |
Hey gyrene2083,
Good persistence with the movies I can understand how you feel as its frustrating when others are getting some great results and you are still on the basics! My aim is to reach a competence level that Kwag and Sansgrip would be proud of, but thats a long way yet! In answer to your question, there is a util called chapterXtractor which allows you to get all the chapter points from a DVD. You can then feed this raw info into VCDEasy so the chapter points are identical. (right click on the chapter list box in vcdeasy and past chapterxtractor data). The hardest part os any VCD rip I find is if you want to create chapter menu's. I've managed to strip the main menu and chapters sequence from a DVD before and created a great front end menu using PBC. If there are menu items I don't want to see, I mask them out using the logo filter from vdub. The results are worth the effor though! :D |
I have found if the source is DVD that you can use a prog called chapterxtractor to import chapter info to VCDEasy, not sure exactly how to do it as I have never used chapterxtractor.

Hi Fiz.
I really didn't understand how you make chapter's menus. I also use chapterXtrator to get the original points and paste it on EasyVCD properly place. But only this. Could you explain the phases to make a chapter's menu, starting with the original DVD's chapters. And gyrene2083, I'm glad to see that with reached some encodes. I want to say you that making manually my encodes (without dvd2svcd) I was able to reach much better results. For example: manually you can encode a mpeg1 with 528x480 resolution, of ~2hours length with a fabulous quality. And that´s not so difficult. You should try. LaBomba |
I have tried manually and it didnt go to well but, being the stubborn Marine that I am I am not giving up. I am still playing around with the scripts from kwag and I'm always on this site learning more.
If you have any suggestions or tips you can throw my way I would greatly appreciate it. Quick question for you. Do you use TMPGenc, Head@ache and the avs scripts? |

My sequence (with no recent faults): 1- Rip the DVD (only made from DVD sources) with DVDDecrypter. Don´t make any change. Let it selects the main VOB and the give it the destination folder. That's it. 2- I get the vob with DVD2AVI, uncheck the "force film" video option, and hit the preview (F5) for some minutes. Mark the preview info (Aspect Ratio, Frame Rate, Video Type, Frame Type, etc). If the video type is FILM >95%, so I hit ESC button, and check the "Force Film" video option. I save the project (a .d2v file) on the same VIDEO_TS folder created by DVDDecrypter. 3- I generally make encodes with subtitle: I use the vobsub configure to get the subtitle from the VOB ripped. Then I will have a .SUB file on the same VIDEO_TS folder. 4- Get the audio with Head3AChe using Sweethead's Kwag prog. It´s faster then using only Head3AChe. Allways encode with 128kbps, no more no less. 5- Use the TMPEGEnc 2.510 with KVCD3x Template (528x480), using allways a .avs script that has a prediction function on the start frame. I can send you a copy later. With this avs, I only change the VIDEO_TS folder address and the .d2v file, change the movie name on the prediction function, select the number of CDs, put a hash (#) in front of the filters that I will not use, letting without hash the Sampler(length=24) line. Then I change the destination folder of the .m1v file for the same VIDEO_TS folder, and hit Start. Look: if you use the script with the Prediction function included, you will see the infos of the movie on the TMPGEnc preview. I copy that infos (total of frames, total size in seconds and minutes, size of the sample file for all size of audio rate, size of audio file for each audio rate option, a lot of info!) let the CQ number in 60 and hit Start. In few minutes I have a .m1v file with some filesize near of the sample filesize predicted. I adjust the CQ number (upper if the sample filesize is lower than the predicted filesize, lower if not). Hit Start again, see the file size result and make another adjust. With 3 or 4 shots I can get a sample with the nearst filesize of the predicted file size. Allways I'm testing the filters putting or not a hash (#) on the lines. When the results are OK (quality and the filesize nearst of the predicted filesize) I put a hash (#) on the Sampler(length=24) line, save the project (make a .tpr file) open the batch encode option, add the .tpr file, hit RUN and on the first screen select auto shutdown. That's it!!! I go to sleep. The computer auto shutdown at the end of the encode. 6 - With the .m1v file ready, I mux it with the .mp2 file on the BBMpeg. 7 - I open the EasyVCD program and add the .mpg file created by BBMpeg. 8 - I extract the chapters with chapterXtratctor (DVD Maestro Preset) copy and paste on the EasyVCD chapters place. 9 - Make a image of the disc and burn the image with Nero on Fireburner. It's a piece of cake  :!: LaBomba Edit: I need to mention that all these sucessful sequence would not be possible with the amazing advices and hints of all the masters of this site (Kwag, Sansgrip, BlackPrince, Ren, Jellygoose, and all the other guys I don't remenber). Thanks a lot !!! Edit: Sorry guys! "all these sucessful sequence would not be possible WITHOUT ..."   |

Hi Jorel.
I´m not using dvd2svcd anymore. See this thread: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic....r=asc&start=30 I´m using the latest script released by rendalunit, where the number of cds can be informed. So, I give a number of cds (cds default=1) on my script and the first frame give me the right sample filesize. Is very easy. Even you can choose the size of media (74,80 or 90 min). LaBomba |

Here briefly what I do: There is usually a VOB file on the DVD that contains the original menu screen and chapter selections. If you use smartripper or dvddecryptor, it automatically selects the main feature for ripping. You need to also rip the other VOB files from the DVD and play them back in powerdvd or another player to see if it contain the menu and chapter sequences. You then encode from this VOB the menu sequences you want to use. I do this with a combination of virtualdub and tmpegenc. I ony use vdub to overlay the dvd menu selection text with my own. For example, the DVD menu screen may have options for Special features, deleted scenes etc. But I just want it to say: 1. Play Movie 2. Chapters Menu I usually create a bitmap with this text on it and overlay it ontop of the dvd menu text using the logo filter in vdub. It sounds complex but its really not that bad. Just it takes too much effort to do so I only to if for my 'platinum' rips! |
Thanks a lot Fiz!
I´ll give a try. |
Gracias Labomba thank you so much for your input. It is greatly appreciated. It's funny, I have been doing this now steadily for about 3 weeks now and I already have a binder of all the tips I get and program how to's.
I am going to try this tutorial with the "Deuce's Wild" DVD. What type of player do you have? I have been thinking of purchasing a new player because my present Toshiba SD-3109 doesn't play VCD's nor does it play KVCD's. I've tried several different media and speeds only to get frustrated and...well let's just say that being latino and a Marine is not a good combination when you get angry. So, any suggestions again would be greatly appreciated. Gracias por todo. -Sempre Fidelis wil P.S. Fiz pardon my ignorance but can you put that in a "Dummies for Chapter Encoding," way for me? I've spent half my life in a boxing ring, and four years in and out of the US MARINE CORPS Gas Chamber, :gun: so I'm a little slow :imstupid: ... |
Re: Letterbox advice
Let me ask another way.
What changes do I need to make to this template AND tmpgenc screens to handle 16:9 NTSC Film source for SKVCD 352x480 and KVCDx3MPEG2 templates without screen size distortion? Quote:

Hi gyrene2083, you're welcome.
I need to advice you that you'll need a lot of binders in a couple months. My wife said that I need to decide: the marriage or bring the papers, cds, covers and other 'encode addict' stuff. I ask for some days to answer her    :!: I have a Sony DVP-NS400. It's a good player but don't play "pure" SVCD and "pure" MP3. I said "pure" cause you can use some tricks to make fakes SVCD and fakes MP3. I made a research on VCDHelp before to buy. And guess that this player was a good "value for money" model. LaBomba |

Assuming you have just finished encoding your movie. One thing to bear in mind. Your final encode must account for about 10Mb-15Mb to cover the size of the additional menu mpg files. Code:
1) Rip all remaining VOB files from the DVD. As I said it is time consuming and I only do this for rips I really want to show off with. Apologies for the space I've taken up in this thread... |
Thanks Labomba and Fiz. Labomba I'm on my second binder already, and my wife has already given up on me. She did that when I used to box. So this is nothing new to her. She enjoys the fact that I'm home though and that this isn't a contact sport. I'll go to VCDHelp and check out what they have.
Fiz, thanks for the guide like you said it looks to be time consuming and I believe, as yourself, I will only do this for prime rips. Wish me luck, and I wish you guys all the best. Siempre Fidelis Wil |
