Why not have DVD style menus in VCDs?
As MPEG sequences can have the same interactivity as MPEG stills, I don't see why we can't have DVD style menus in VCDs. Couldn't we somehow rip the menu animations and music from a DVD and encode them into a standard MPEG format? This could loop over and over until someone selects something. The Next and Previous buttons would (in my opinion) be a good enough substitute for the Up/Down/Left/Right buttons, pressing "Next" on menu screen 1 takes you to menu screen 2, which is exactly the same, except that pressing Enter on this screen would take you the choice that is currently highlighted in some way, complicated menu structures could be built in this way, that look exactly like the original DVD. Problem is, ripping menu animations too would leave a bit less space for the movie, and of course it would be a lot of work. But is there any way to rip menu animations? Has anyone tried anything similar to this?

In the article at
http://home.att.net/~adam.poole/Introduction.htm Step 1 : talks about selecting the main movie files and makes note that the VOB preceeding the main movie is the menu VOB EX: VTS_01_0.VOB in his example is the menu's VOB and VTS_01_1 - x are the movie VOB's Hope that helps -phibertron |

Hi!
VCDEasy is definitely what you need to create DVD-like VCDs! You may also need Slide Show Movie Maker to make still images with sound if you want : http://www.joern-thiemann.de/tools/index.html. I had a lot of fun creating VCD with interactive menu, in order to tease my pro-divx friends  My best work features animated menus (with sound!), chapter selection, main movie, extra scenes & actors bio (Cube). Credits goes to Kwag for his template of course... I have stopped doing this because it really takes too much time. Is anyone ready to develop a prog that would automate everything : just insert DVD and press "Rip Menus and bonus"?  |
hi Graal_CPM
