KDVD: Authoring problems - slowly gets out of sync?
 

Okay, I am using the KDVD half PAL template and encoding with TMPG.

Now, I used both DVD Workshop 1.2 and Movie Factory 2 and everytime the audio starts off fine but then slowly gets out of sync, until it ends up like a bad Bruce Lee dubbed movie. Normally I would blame it on myself, but the actual MPG file plays fine and in sync, it only goes out of sync when converted to DVD format. But I know the KDVD templates are DVD compatible, so what gives ? Why does the produced MPG file sound fine and in sync but not when DVD converted ?

So then I tried TMPG DVD Author. This came up with an error message making out the DVD wasn't compliant. Here is the error message I got....

Well the error TMPGEnc can't author that file is, that you probably have set 16:9 as Ratio Setting, when it was supposed to be 4:3. At this resolution it needs to be encoded 4:3.
However that doesn't explain the synch problems i guess...
Was your Source DVD?
What was your script and your TMPGEnc settings?

The thing is, the KDVD half template auto-sets it at 16:9 so how was I, or anyone else meant to know this should be changed to 4:3 ? If it mentions it in a FAQ or guide, then fair enough, but the fact it auto-sets it a this is a bit misleading then. DVD Workshop accepts it okay at 16:9 though and it played back fine on my DVD player, except with audio out of sync.

As for the source, it was a DIVX file. The template I used was KDVD Half PAL, and I didn't edit the template at all or change any settings. I used TMPG to join together the audio and video. Played back the MPEG file and it was fine. Converted it to DVD using Ulead's software, and slowly as time goes on the audio goes.

Ok, this explains some things... TMPGEnc Auto-Sets the Aspect Ration to 16:9 because a DivX uses often odd resolutions. Always have it set to 4:3 when you encode at Half-D1 from now on.
Now for the audio issue...
If it's a DivX source, there are several things to care about. You gotta find out what kind of audio your DivX has. Does it have variable bitrate maybe? You have to demux the Avi File with VirtualDub and check what kind of audio your source file have. Does the audio stay in sync throughout the movie when viewed on your computer?
Did you check if the audio is @ 48khz ?

Ah, I see ok. Well, here is some info.....

I extracted the audio to wav using AVI2WAV, renamed WAV to MP3, decoded back to WAV using RazorLame. Used BeSweet to change the audio from 23fps (which the divx was) to 25fps. Then used Sound Forge to convert the audio in to a 224 DVD compatible MPEG stream. Then used TMPG to Multiplex the audio and video together. As mentioned, it came out fine in the MPEG file, from start to end it was in-sync. So I thought it was going to be fine.

Then when converted to DVD the audio slowly goes off course as the movie progresses, and by the end it is a good 1.5 to 2 seconds off.

But even if it does show me an error, why does it work in the DVD MPEG file but not when converted to DVD vobs/ifos ?

Oh and I have tried the DVD on both a player and my PC, and it is off-sync on both, so I know it isn't my DVD player.

That´s what it always says, just click ok and continue!

You can try patching it with DVDPatcher to reset the aspect ratio to 4:3. Check out the video and see if it looks okay and try again with DVD Author.

Have you set VirtualDub to "Full Processing Mode" under Audio ?

...or try using NanDub to extract the audio, I always use this and have never had any problems. :D

Use VirtualDub:

Go to File>open>(select your avi file)
You will get a message ?VBR audio stream detected? Just click on ?OK? button
Go to Audio>Full Processing mode (check this)
Go to File>Save as WAV (save file with wav extension)
When done close VirtualDub.

As I see Source was DivX NTSC 23.976 fps , Right ??? :?
And u are converting it to PAL 25 fps !!! :?

I think every DVD player in europe can play NTSC too .
From my experience this kind of conversion always will give u V/A async problems .
Best is to convert NTSC source to NTSC mpg .
First of all try to convert to NTSC and if this can't help try to add to your avs script ASSUMEfps() line .
I didn't tryed myself but maybe it can help .

bman, yep I do convert 23.976fps to PAL because I have found using the KDVD templates that the NTSC makes everything seem so sped up and fast. Everyone talks a lot faster and it seems 1.5x rather then 1x. The thing is though, my PAL conversion copies are normally always fine, I have done over 5 and they have all been in-sync on my DVD player before, so I know my method is okay, as I also convert the audio from 23fps to 25fps in BeSure and that usually works fine. If you can tell me way to get NTSC copies of 23fps DIVX files without them seeming sped up and fast, then please do as it will save me the bother of PAL converting.

It was just this one Divx file that was bugging me as it was in-sync normally but not when DVD'd.

Oh, and one quick query, any idea why my computer just cuts out to a "Blue Screen of Death" message a lot of the time when converting video files in TMPG ? Does this happen to anyone else ? Something about memory dumps or something. Usually it resets but I told my computer to give me the error message.

Are u encoding with TMPGenc 2.5.10 or 2.5.11 :?:
If so I've seen in another tread that best is 2.53 or 2.58 to avoid this kind of messages .
I'm working with 2.58 and it's much , much stable on my system than 2.5.10 or 2.5.11 .

OK, I have ben trying to backup a dvd with the kdvd D1 template, and am encountering 2 problems:

1.- Have a horizontal border on both top and bottom of the video information. This is causing the video to be smaller in heigth than what is being seeing when the original dvd is played.
2.- The sound is fine, when viewing the bbmpeg output, but the burnt c0py looses its audio towards the end of the test. (The test sample is about 3.5 minutes long, the audio stops at around minute 2.35, the video plays well through out the tape.

I have used different settings with dvd2avi, tmpeng, and moviestacker, and to the best of my recollection and notes, the latest set up was as follow:
A) DVD2AVI-Preview settings:16:9,- frame rate 23.976- video type: film.
Video settings: Forced film - Color space YUV- 4:2:2 - YUV checked - -Luminance filter: half way on both, and the box is checked. - Clip and resize: 720X 480, the luminace box is also checked here.
Audio settings: Track #1 checked - Channel format: Dolby digital - Dolby digital: demux - Mpeg audio : demux - 48>44.1: off - Normalization box checked.

B) Movietacker settings:

4).- TMPGenc:
Using the DVD Template. (Do not see the Avisynth/Virtual Dub script reader v)1 under environmental settings, and forced the file manually by using "all files" when loading the avs file coming from dvd2avi) But do not know if this is creaing the audio problem, particualrly if the audio can be heard when playing the bbmpeg file with power dvd)

5.- BBmpeg settings: Using Red-M settings, video stream VCD

6.- Outpt of BBmpeg plays test file with no problems. This file is then loaded into Tmpeg Author software, and it runs OK.

7.- Using Nero Express to burn dvd. No problem burning it. But as mentioned above, I am having the audio and the border issue that I would like to resolve.

I have gone over countless posts, in both english and spanish, changed settings, deleted all files and start from the beginning several times, but the result is the same with the audio. Originally I had horizontal and vertical borders, but now I only have the borders going across the screen on both the top and the bottom of the movie segment, that I would like to eliminate, if possible.

I do not mena to be a pain with my questions, to most of you these are basic questions, but I just do not know what to do..............and your help is appreciated.

Helloo again:
Sorry, I posted this answer in a different thread. But I was saying that the audio problem appears to be resolved. I checked the re-encode audio w/output of tracks (or something like that) on the tmpeg dvd author software. I will check this again. The horizontal borders are still present and do need your help to correct that issue.
