Can you author a dvd using both ntsc and pal? [Yes!]

I know that using both ntsc and pal is not allowed by the dvd spec. I was only interested in testing if it was possible to author a dvd with both ntsc and pal and playing it on my standalone dvdplayer. My dvdplayer philips dvd722 played this dvd without any problems. I don't think that all dvdplayers are capable of playing this dvd because it's not done according to the dvd spec and imo is following the dvd spec the most important thing to do for acheving the best compability with dvdplayers. I haven't seen any homemade dvd yet that has contained both ntsc and pal so i decided to call this a MultiformatDVD. For those who are interested in testing this MultiformatDVD can downloadit here: http://212.214.94.37/pmk/

Please note that the main menu is in ntsc and the reason for this is that most ntsc users doesn't have a multisystem tv. Most pal users have a multisystem tv and therefore this was the best solution to use.

Maybe it's not defined, but then that doesn't mean it's not allowed!
I don't recall reading anything related to that on the DVD Demystified site, but I could be wrong :!:
I believe it's a restriction on authoring programs. But I don't see any problems with having multiple programs in a DVD, some made NTSC and some PAL.
As long as each complete program is on one format or the other :)

Kwag,

I have experienced that some dvdplayers has problems playing vcd's that contains both ntsc and pal. If some dvdplayers has problems with this it's most likely that there are some dvdplayers that are going to have problems playing a dvd with both ntsc and pal. I'm begining to wonder after reading your post if the authoring programs doesn't allow this because they can't garantee that every dvdplayer can play this correctly.

Then that leaves us to experiment, and live on the edge :D
Lucky for the (most?) ones that can play ;)
