I am saving captured VHS source material to DVD using some KVCD templates tailored to my requirements so I can fit three or four quality films on a DVD.

I have a subtitle creator but no matter where on the net I have searrched cannot find out how to insert subtitles into my vob files. Any recommendations, either freeware or shareware (am on low wage and hoping to buy TMPGenc DVD authoring software so freeware preferred).

Thanks

Dfan,

Not sure if these places have guides for subtitling,,
http://www.freestuffplaza.com/subtitles.htm
http://www.divxsubtitles.net/
but if not,,,, there may be a couple of appz to incorporate subtitles into your vob's. Not sure if the tmpgenc one does.
I've tested Maestro,,and it does do subtitles, and two audio tracks. {but lacks Menu creation-but DvDMenu Studio takes care of that}.

I have been unsuccessful in the subtitle as the programs I`ve foound can only put subtitles into a vob if subtitles of some form already exist so will have to keep an eye out for something similar.

Thanks for the links though, found some handy things out

have u tried something like WinsubMuxer to add subtitles to the mpg files {assuming that you are creating or capturing to mpg or avi-mpg-vob} and then converting to vob's ?

haven't tried Maestro in a while, but it did allow to insert subs into movies..
but keep us posted..

I haven`t come across that program, winsub muxer. If you add subs to mpeg and then convert them to vob wouldnt the subtitles be permanent (as in always on)?

I shall have to look into that, and you are right about how I make up dvd`s. I capture them as an avi, use TMPGenc to convert to video cd format with some noise reduction if captured from video tape, then use TMPGenc DVD authour to write the mpg files as vobs.

oh,,know what,,,
test a small sample on a clip with winsubmuxer first.
if you were doing svcd's and your player supported subs,,,then u could turn them on and off....they wouldnt be permanent, no. {as they would be on an avi or a divx file}. I still say that Maestro or another dvd authoring app is your best bet..

Could you post a link to where I can find winsub muxer? I tried google with variations and didn`t come up with the program and it sounds like it could solve the problem

I`m using TMPGenc dvd author to compose the dvd, it lets me use mpeg 1 files without recoding them, and I can do chaptering and motion menus easily, would Maestro allow that and do the subtitles perhaps?

Thanks again for the help, I think I`ll go and find out more about Maestro now.

I don't think WinSubMux is DVD Compliant... If you still want to try it use this link: WinSubMux 0.2.0.2
If it doesn't work try DVDMaestro (no demo available) using the guide on Doom9
If you can't find DVDMaestro on the net, try this guide:
Guide:Switchable subtitles in DVDLab
If your files aren't DVD Compliant (not 720/352-480/576) you can use DVDPatcher to fool your authoring program.

good luck!
