i have made a lot of kvcds and ksvcds in the past. now i bought a dvd-writer and i would like to start archiving movies on dvd-r's. do i have to encode my movies to kdvd before burning or can i just burn my k(s)vcds on a dvd-r and watch them on a standalone dvd-player (lg 6053) ?

To be DVD compliant, a video must be either :

-352 * 240(28 in MPEG1
-352 * 480(576) in MPEG2
-704 * 480(576) in MPEG2
-720 * 480(576) in MPEG2

And the audio must be in 48Khz.

If your KVCD enter in these restrictions, you can author them directly into a DVD. Else you will have to reencode the video and/or the audio.

On the other hand, while different specs may be not compliant it doesn't necessarilly mean that they won't play in some DVD models. You'll have to test with your specific player and judge if compliance is worth over not needing to reencode.

Also the max frames per GOP has to be 15 (PAL) or 18 (NTSC)!
As you maybe encoded all your KVCDs to KVCD! specs which means regulary 24 frames per GOP. But you have to try maybe your player supports this as GFR said. Only if you directly encode to KDVD! the KDVD-Template is already set to the legal max frames per GOP settings.

In case of wrong size (maybe 480x480 or 480x576) you could try to patch the headers ("DVD Patcher" or "Restream") size informations to legal sizes before authoring these KVCD Streams as aKDVD, but don't forget to patch the final VOB's Headers back to their orig size information, by this you'll author a xDVD and also here you have to try if the playback on your player works fine afterwards. (We often use this method to get ShrinkDVD to accept our mpeg1 streams as authored VOBs so they can be transformed)

Also there have been reports that at 352x240(28 some players only accept these mpeg1 streams in DVD mode encoded as CBR.

I think that the probleme with the resolutions is that very often that's the authoring software that refuses the video is the resolution isn't compliant. Am I wrong ?

No you aren't wrong...
(I hope I understood your question well)
The Authoring Program reads the header of the input mpeg, by this it can recognise the state of resolution and if its legal or not. Thats why we can do that "DVD Patcher"-Header Trick ... to just apply a legal resolution fake so the Auth.Progr. accepts this. But Anyhow you would end up with a xDVD even everything is done right during patching workout ... and therefore the Applications to-be-safe routine refering to the import sizes makes sense. But I think you already know that.

And I think DVDLab can take non-standard streams without the patcher.

one more thing:
i have a dvd-player that supports MPEG1/2 ISO which means i dont have to author the files to get them to play on my standalone. Now I would like to create a dvd-r with 9 tv episodes and a menu but all the programs that you can create menus with automatically author my mpg files. is there a basic easy-to-use (no dvd maestro or the sort) that just lets you create menus for your dvds and then lets you burn the files the way you want to (dvd-iso in my case). any help would be greatly appreciated.

tyler5,

I also suggest DVD-Lab, it can easily created a menu, won't require you to demux your MPEGs and can use non-standard files.

You won't find a tool that do menu without authoring the DVD. How do you want to explain to the player wich video has to be played when you push key 1 ?

To put a menu and link it to the different sequences on the DVD, that is the definition of the word "authoring".

I don't know if it will work... my player (Philco dv-p2500) supports MPEG ISO but, only on CD's. It won't play a "DVD-ISO" (I have tested it). Too bad, because then I could burn 4G of mp3 in one DVD-R

I guess it's the same dumb limitation that makes mini-DVDs not work

If you want to burn kvcd / skvcd's onto dvd, try using Muxer 2.03 to separate the files, then use DVD-Lab to put the dvd together.

If the frame size is non-dvd compliant you can accept this in the properties menu of DVD-lab, and then add the menus, chapters and so on to the dvd.

However, with the audio you will have to use the DVD-lab audio transcoder to bring it up to DVD compliance.

However, once all of this has been done you should be on your way to putting the kvcd / skvcd's onto a DVD. From what i've experienced, as long as your dvd player can play kvcd / skvcd then the dvd should play fine.
