Avisynth: Order of Filters?
 

Is there a particular order for certian filters. On doom I have heard putting convultion befor resizing or sharpen befor resizing. What is the best order ?

There is a hundred opinions out there for filter order. I'll give you mine but the best idea is to play around and make a few coasters or get a RW. Generally most people do a deinterlace/inverse telecide (depending on your source), some sort of noise reduction (I use convolution3D) to get rid of any noise, resize ( I use lanczos because it makes the image sharper), and then feed that into Tmpg. Some people add others at the end to tweak the colours or another gentle temporal filter etc. But in the end it is what you like.

if resize comes first=more final size ,less time to encode
if resize comes after=less final size ,more time to encode

with anyone.....convolution,tweak,focus.....etc.

Here's my 2 cents on Order of the Filters which is based on picture
quality vs speed of encode:

1) Longer encode but higher picture quality

.....Crop (first)
.....Temporal Smooth (second)
.....Resize (third)

2) Shorter encode but a little less picture quality

.....Crop (first)
.....Resize (second)
.....Temporal Smooth (third)

I seems that when using 1) avisynth as a frameserver works better
when cropping and smoothing are done before resizing. Try a short
clip using Trim(0,720) or 30 seconds and see how long each encodes
and how good they look. We use 2) most of the time because encode
times using might be 30 to 40% less. :)

I’ll put in a word for running temporal smoothing before deinterlacing/inverse telecine. That reduces mistakes in the deinterlacing/IVTC process. And besides, for deinterlacing it’s faster than running it afterward.
