I am playing with the 352x480 template at cq 80 and I've got lots of room left for one cd. My understanding is, after CQ 80, you don't see much difference in output. So, should I start pushing up bitrates at this point??

Hi Reno,

After ~90, there's no more visual difference. So it doesn't matter if you encode at CQ=90 or CQ=100, only that CQ=100 will produce a much larger file size
You might want to increase the MAX bit rate to reduce blocks on high action scenes.

WoW Kwag, I did'nt know this So if a hit my sample size with CQ,lets say 95-98, i wont get any better quality than 90 CQ . So it's better to have the CQ on 90 insted of 91-100, cause It will give a me a smaler output size,am I right?? . Is that what you mean

~What's "MAX bit rate" and were can i change it

Max(maximum) bitrate is in the same location you change CQ. What you asked, that is exactly what he means.

In TMPGEnc click Setting, then, next to Rate control mode where it says Constant Quality (CQ) click Setting. Change Maximum bitrate to something higher. Don't go too high though as some DVD players have trouble playing VCDs over 3000 kbps, although some can play up to 9000 I believe.

Yes, but prediction will work normally.

Well 2520 is SVCD max bitrate so you shouldn't need anything higher than that. But then thats for 480x480 so I suppose you could go up to around 3000 for the absolute best quality no matter what at higher resolutions. But I'd recomend around 2600 max.

good to know, that there´s no need to raise the cq over 90
will a higher bitrate than 1150 with the lbr-kvcd template work, or does the template not support higher bitrates?

It will work fine, but it would be the same if you use the KVCD 352x240 PLUS, which is already set to MAX=1,800Kbps. Other than that, it's identical to the KVCD LBR

yes of course, but if i use this one, i will not get matrix to on cd-r i think.
when i did the matrix rip with the lbr template i could easily set the cq to 100, so i wanted to know if raising the max bitrate will work

Matrix will fit fine in one CD even at 352x480 if you use Spacedust +NoMo + C3D
( And I dare say it will fit at 528x480 with KVCDx3 too )
Either way, always use file prediction
