Avisynth: What does noise look like?

a lot of you may laugh, reading this question, but i´m serious!

i often read the "reducing noise with blockbuster" etc, but i do not really understand it´s meaning. i come from germany and literally translated it would have something to do with audio, not with video.

could someone give me a short definition?

Blockbuster is as the name tells for reducing blocks in videos. This has something to do with the video encoders.
Noise is the dust like "pixels" in the video.

[german]
Noise: Rauschen.
Bei alten Filmen und vorallem VHS-Aufnahmen gut sichtbar.
