Avisynth: Optimal Script for DVD to KDVD ?

Hi everybody...

What scriopt do you guys use to fit let's say 3 movies on a KDVD (around 360 min. maybe...) ? :roll:
Also do you use the KVCD GOP and Notch Matrix or leave everything standard? How would you predict? (what is the maximum size to use/muxing overhead...)
I'm new to this but will get a DVD Burner very soon since prices are falling... :wink:
Thanks for replys... :D

Hi Jellygoose,

i'm using the latest MA script, the standard DVD-GOP and the Notch Matrix.
I'm targeting for 1400 MB including audio, that will fit 3 movies with ~10 seconds of a motion menu (each 24 chapters) for these three movies.

Use the optimal script of kwag. The results are very good.

Why you don't load the KDVD Templates so you have to do nothing more and can encode your movies?

Hi Jell!
3 Movies won't be a problem if each of them won't exceed about 120Mins. Well see this as Average ;-)
In case of DVD where we don't have to compress that much (2-3 Movies on 1 DVD-R) like in comparison to the case of OneCDEncodings. I wouldn't choose the MA Part, cause this could cause Quality loss in Scenes containing static elements in foreground and big fast moving elements in Background as you already know. Therefore I only would choose MA only if needed, maybe in the case of fitting more than 3 Movies on one DVD-R.
So, use a Script according to the needing of noise-treatment etc.

In Case of AVS 2.5x I shurely would apply the BlindPP(...) as you know from DialHots Scripts and in case of a good source quality maybe a minimal Deen("a2d",x,x,x) in combination with a touch of TemporalSoften(x,x,x,x,2).
So don't treat the movie that heavy as you encode to K-DVD cause your principal should be giving a bigger focus to quality in relation to compression.
So (as always) your script contents do depend on the source quality.

Well as I remember VMesquita build some tools to archieve a good calculation so that a number of movie will fit well. You also can use Calcumatic as it supports DVD Media size too. There's a Thread in here where Dialhot and I talked about the best way to predict. On the one hand, writing a script which imports all streams ehich will be encoded and where a prediction will be done on the whole moviedata .... or where all movies will be predicted separately. But I think this will be a philosophy to say which method will give the most acurate sizes ... so u have to do tests by yourself ... this Week Ill check that out too.
Use the KVCD Notch matrix as it gives aou a superb quality when compressing for DVD purposes.

I always put only 2 movies on a KDVD and also if possible anamorph cause to me in such a case ... its the quality that counts. You'll see the prices of DVD media will fall down even more - that will be the future and then you're unhappy with to much compressed movies on one DVD-R when maybe in the future you'll purchasie a large TVset or a Beamer. ;-)

My recomendation:
Get a multiformat DVD Burner! Also watch out if that burner is able to overburn in CD/RW mode ... and if that burner will be supported in future Firmware releases. Cause maybe you get some cheap Media based on good rewiews from other users and maybe they won't work well on your DVD recorder, ... in that case often a FirmwareUpdate helps.

Hi incredible!

Thanks for the help on this. Well I also want my movies to have the original AC3s, to have Dolby Digital... 8)
That's actually the main reason why I'm going to get a DVD burner... So you put 2 movies on one DVD? I was actually planning on getting a multiformat burner... Is there one you could already recommend? :roll:
You're always being a big help for me and I'm also always grateful! :wink:
I guess I'll wait for this One-CD LOTR II encode and make a 1 DVD encode with AC3 sound out of it! :mrgreen:
One more question: Do you guys actually use Overscan on KDVD? I dodn't own a 16:9 TV-Set yet, but wouldn't I see these bars on them? :roll:

AC3 5.1 :arrow: A real "must"!! ;-) I also use the Engl. and the German audio ... to practice my english :arrow: to practice my english and therefore in the future less mistakes in my postings :lol:

Most of my encoded DVD-Rs contain 2 Movies (anamorph, WITHOUt Overscan, just a bit treated by minimal denoising filters)

Almost every week there comes out a new model, so Im sorry. I got my DVD-R105 from Pioneer as bulk version some month ago and Im happy with it. BUT now I would look at dooyoo.de or ciao.de, ... also asking at some DVD encoding forums ....thats the way I would choose to see which will be a good choice ... if I would buy one NOW. ;-)

Shure! ... Well to explain my way of work: If I do make a SAFE-Backup I always choose quality therefore DVD-R is my first choice .... the other way :arrow: our OneCdEncoding way, ... is just a sport and to see what's possible and how I can push the limits by still avoiding Eye-punching outputs

Well I know 2 friends which do have a Flat plasma based 16:9 Tv .... and as TV Broadcasting also delivers streams with bad edges or little black bars on the sides, such a TV model also got its Overscan option.
But overscan or not does nothing have to do with 16:9 TV or not!
In case of a 16:9 TV when you "feed" it with a Letterboxed video stream the image will be sized proportionally so the width fits ... therefore the borders at the top and the bottom will be cropped. And thats also why you enjoy the advantage of anamorph encodings :arrow: the height (wich is most importand for a sharp view) won't be resized that much as you would "feed" it with a letterboxed stream .. in an anamorph state the 720x576 stream will be resized to 1024x576! So the proportion will be correct and you see the active movie area at a 16:9 view in a better quality!

Thats also something in case of compression ... you can compress and compress ... alter the matrix, cut more frequencies, .. enlarge the GOP ... reduce the encoding size to 352x288.. performing a big overscan .. finally your movie will fit on one CD-R. In case of a "normal" TV its "ok" ... well maybe than it will be a bit better than VHS ;-) But as I said ... if one day you will own a big TVset for example a good beamer or even plasma *lechz* .. you will see a lot of whats lost according to the quality.
So go and get your DVD-R burner and do a "relax" encoding of your LOTR II ;-) Just to have one Safe Backup in case of ... :angryfire:

I've used very light filtering on my DVD encodes (unless they are analog captures) lately. If the source is a noisy one, I add Deen/MipSmooth(as soon as it gets fixed) with very low thresholds.

Code:

MPEG2Source()
Crop()
UnDot()
TemporalSoften(2,4,8,6,2)
BicubicResize()
AddBorders()
DCTFilter(1,1,1,1,1,1,0.5,0)
#ConverttoYUY2() if needed
Limiter()

Jell, ... a little postscriptum:

Yesterday I tried to "transcode" LOTR II to fit on one DVD-5 Media.
Quality (and mine takes 180mins!! therefore not that much as yours) is very bad, ... no matter using DVD2One, DVDshrink (latest vers.) ..etc.
:arrow: Fast moving scenes come out too blocky!
Therefore this night I did a non-standard-Matrix based anamorph 720x576 encode min800, avg 2500, max 8500, .... :arrow: Quality came out *much* better! ... this evening Ill try to use IFOedit to remux the original VOB files with the new encoded .m2v stream so it'll fit one one DVD-5 containing all the menues and extras. But I think I'll have to re-set the chapter entries cause Im not shure if the original entries will match the I Frames of the new GOP structure which is based on the GOP structure of the original.

... we'll see

Hi Guys,
Let me see if I get it. Nowadays I own a plain old 4:3 TVset. I'm planning on buying me a 32" 16:9 model next year.
Anyway I'm just start doing my first KDVDs as untill now I just made a few KVCDs.
As a good KVCD fan I always did my movies with the MA-Script but you are saying that if I aim to have good quality movies I should forget MA.
More, you are saying that I should make my movies anamorphic. This anamorphic thing is not a new word for me but it always confused me a bit. Does it have to do only with the script or should I need to change something in TMPG also?
What about overscaning. Should I remove the overscan part of my "GripCrop(704,576, overscan=2)" AVS line?
Here is a copy of my AVS script of the LOTR II movie.
Can you guys give me a hand on what I should remove and/or insert on it so I can make good quality anamorphic KDVDs compatible with my current 4:3 TV and with my future 16:9 TV...
BTW I always set TMPG to encode my movies in 704x576 for 4:3 display in full screen (keep aspect ratio) video arrange mode.
Anything to change here too?
Thanks in advance.

Hi rds_correia,

Try the latest MA script. The one you posted, is the old one.
Also, for that target resolution of 704x576, leave overscan set at 2 so you don't encode what your TV will chew up on the sides ;)

rds_correia 12-06-2003 08:14 AM

Hi Kwag :D :D ,
You gotta be kiding. There is a new MA script and I didn't notice it...
This is what you get when you go away for 2 months.
Let me see if I can find it.
BTW would you set your KDVDs AR to 16:9 Display AR or leave it with 4:3 Display??
I've found many experiences from other guys that have turned to anamorphic when they moved from 4:3 TV to 16:9 TV.
Many many thanks man.
