Avisynth: Lanczos4resize

the new avisynth support Lanczos4Resize.

"Lanczos4Resize is closely related to LanczosResize (correct name: Lanczos3Resize).
The latter uses a 6-tap filter and the former a 8-tap filter to do the resizing.
The result is that Lanczos4Resize produces sharper images.
Especially usefull when upsizing a clip."

i did tests with clean sources (without upsizing) and can't see diferences.

anyone test and get better results?

Well, as we remeber my "how funny" One-Half-One filtering Thread, a sharp upscale can "fake" the eyes on the result that an image "appears" sharp "again".

But I think its a difference in sharpen "details" OR in just sharpen "bigger edges" of an image

"fake" is the word that i never had found before

This might be a good post to post this question:

When going UP (video or graphic) I get best results with Lanczos or B-Spline (eg - photoshop filter s-spline).

What's a good filter to use going DOWN - dvd to vcd size. I'd imagine that it'd be different, after all we want different results. Up is creating pixels from exisiting data, down is destroying pixels. Maybe even a basic nearest neighbour will give sharper edges?

In "theory", bilinear for "Down Scaling", and BiCubic for "Up Scaling".
In practice, we use BiCubic for everything

Ok, another Q - is it better for dvd -> kvcd to have avisynth bicubic or mencoder do the bicubic (1) avisynth dvd to vcd size then mencoder encodes to kvcd or 2) avisynth servers the dvd size to mencoder which resizes and encodes)?

Also, I've just discovered (for me at least) in mencoder, -sws 6 gives better results than lanz or bicub spline.
