Alternative capture software for Hauppauge PVR 350?
I've just bought the Hauppauge PVR 350 and as everyone knows, WinTV2K is a big pile of poo. So i've been hunting around for some alternatives but all the ones i've tried only record from the TV tuner and not the video i have connected to the card.
That's literally all i want it for, to capture VHS for KDVD. I have tried GBPVR(couldn't get passed a .net framework error:http://forums.gbpvr.com/showthread.php?t=13601), Media Portal, ChrisTV, GotTV,CTPVR(wouldn't load), WinTVCap and probably a few others. There must be a program like VirtualVCR for the 350. I've been at this for four days now and i just want to use my new card. I have a home video collection dating back to 1989 waiting to go on KDVD. If anyone can help out i would be so appreciative. Thanks |
What's wrong with WinTVCap? Have you tried playing around with the ini file?

Yeah but i dunno what i'm doing. For a start, how do i choose the input? I managed to capture sound but the picture was black. I tried the s-video and composite selections on WinTVCapStart.

Post the contents of the wintvcap.ini file and I'll have a look. I still might remember the correct settings.. The main thing is to enable antenna input.

Try changing
InputType = 0 // 0:Cable, 1:Antenna to InputType = 1. Then run the bat file that captures a second from all channels (don't remember whether it was supplied with WinTVCap or WinTVCap Start) to see if you can see the VHS tape captured on some channel. IIRC my VHS shows up at number 36. |
I found the bat file in WinTVCap Start but i am not using an RF aerial cable to connect my video to the card. I'm using the 9 pin S-Video port next to the standard S-Video port. I went ahead and tried it anyway. I set input to 1, like you said, set the recording path, pressed play on the video and clicked on the bat file. When i went to check the captured files, there wern't any.
However, i've been playing with it and i've managed to get a picture up by connecting my video through scart to compsite and then using the supplied composite to S-Video adaptor. Then i have to select Composite in WinTVCap Start. Selecting S-Video gives me a black and white picture which looks like a PAL signal being shown in NTSC. I'll have to buy some decent cables so i can use the S-Video/Composite port. By the way, when i used WinTV2000, i was getting ghosting and trails on some captures. It only happened now and again. It hasn't happened yet on WinTVCap. Could it have been WinTV2000 causing it or is it a hardware issue? Have you come across this at all? |
Black and white with S-video usually means that either the receiving or the transmitting end doesn't know it's S-video signal but treats it as composite.
WinTV2000 uses denoising by default. IIRC it's set on dynamic strength which might produce ghosting at times (that's what happens when the temporal threshold is too high). The forum at shspvr.com might be useful for finding a way to disable filtering if you ever want to use the program. |
Thanks for the info Boulder. I might check it out although i'm quite happy with the results i'm getting from WinTVCap. It's just a shame it doesn't have a real-time preview window so you can see what the video is displaying before you press record.
