Best Capture resolution for VCDs?
 

Hi,

If I want to capture and encode a movie (from tv) as kvcd-352x288 (because my dvd player doesn't like the other kwag mpeg-1 templates), what is the way to get the best results (quality and size)?

a) capture at target resolution (352x288) and so dropping one field of each frame
b) capture both fields (352x576) and (bilinear-)resize to target resolution

Regardless of capture resolution I'll resize via FitCD generated script to crop of black borders (and add them again) and to add a tv-block-overscan of 1.

well I would suggest capturing at a high resolution and then run the the capture file through either fitcd or staight to tempgenc. I'm doing something similar, I am capturing these half an hour short films of a comedy channel and then running it through real producer plus 8 to save on space, I captured t 640 X 480 and used a m-jpeg codec which I got last nite of a friend.

Usually I capture at 352x576 (using picvideo mjpeg codec at q19) and then resize (via FitCD created avs script) to the target resolution of 352x288. Question: Can a highter x resolution at capture increase the quallity or does that only increase the disk space needed for capture?

Hi holgerschlegel,

I don't think you'll see more quality gain capturing above 352x576, if your target is 352x288. You're already capturing both fields, which is good, but increasing the horizontal capture resolution above 352 won't do much.

If you have a noisy source (and plan to do some noise reduction), you should capture at a higher horizontal resolution. Resizing will remove some of the noise in the capture.
