ATI MMC AIW Radeon creates mp2 files?

Please dont flame me over this as im quite new to the capture side of things and was quite impressed with the results.

having messed around with the radeon and its own capture software there wasn't really anything that gave good quality compression, so i set it to capture DVD quality 6MB and started to do some 5 minute captures from off the TV and camcorder, these were on average about 315MB in size and the file was something like capture.mp2. Having messed around with little joy and only being able to fit about 40 mins on a CD with the SVCD template with the advanced reg settings from stinkys site i tried to rename the dvd capture to test.vob and was then able to run it through dvd2avi the only thing was that i got an audio file with the extension .mpa but tmpgenc recognised it no problem and was able to use kwags templates on my TV and camcoder captures, i can now get about 100 to 120 mins of viewing onto each CD and of good quality too.

Can you tell me what extension .mp2 is though or is it something thats generic to ATI

Thx again.

Hi Pnumonic:

MPEG-1 audio uses three audio coding schemes.

Just like .mp3 is Audio MPEG-1 Layer 3, .mp2 is Audio MPEG-1 layer 2.

Audio MPEG-1 is divided in three layers. 1, 2 and 3.

Layer 1: 32-448Khz
Layer 2: 8-384Khz
Layed 3: 8-320Khz

That's just a basic description.

MP2 extension on AIW captures

Kwag is right about the *usual* mp2 extension. However, for ATI users this means MPEG2. For some reason ATI chose to use mp2 for MPEG2 captures. I don't know if it's any different from any other MPEG2, usually I just rename to .mpg, or you *can* use VOB and then use DVD2AVI. I have actually done that successfully one time. You can then convert audio to WAV with BeSweet in order to load it into an AVISYNTH script if you want. I had trouble with synch that way, had to experiment with short encodes to get it synched up again.

One interesting thing I found in using ATI captured "VOB" files in DVD2ATI is that when previewing it indicates the source is FILM, though I captured in interlaced 29.97FPS. I haven't actually burned and played anything encoded to VCD at 23.97FPS with Kwag's template (WITHOUT IVTCing it) so not sure how that will actually end up.

AVI_IO, AIW Radeon & MPA audio

Gotz a weird problem with AVI_IO. I use win2K, on a separate 40 gig drive for video. AVI_IO was capturing fine on this harddrive, fat 32. I converted, {partition magic 7}, this slave drive to NTFS. Mainly, to capture large files unsegmented. Since then, AVI_IO captures about 4 minutes and it reports a message that buffers are full, stops the capture, and if I try to restart avi_io it will crash before loading. If anyone has any idea send it my way ....thx...

I've got a project in the oven right now, will burn and test on the tv later tonight. It's a capture done with the AIW Radeon 32mb, composite capp at dvd resolution from an older vhs tape.
If I capture at low rates, MMC 7.6 VCD template, i dropp up to 30% of frames. If i capp at full dvd, 720x480, mpg2, 8 or 9 bitz, 100 % for ME {motion estimation} for video, 224, 44100 16 for audio, i drop NO frames, none, when capturing off vhs and the tv tuner. Go figure.

Anyway, I rename the mp2 to mpg, feed it through dvd2avi, feed the d2v directly to tmpgenc for video (or vfapi it if u need to edit, feed to virtual dub,,,then frameserv to tmpgenc), I feed the mpa file in the audio section of tmpgenc as it will recognize it and work with it. If you get audio synch problems use mpa2wav to convert the audio to wav and use the wav in tmpgenc or VDub. I load the template, ntsc..adjust whatever settings and encode.
I tried using cce but it didn't like the frameserved file, vdr renamed to avi,,or the vfapi.avi. When doing an svcd, the mp2 capture gets loaded into dvd2svcd directly {filename.mp2 renamed to filename.mpg, or to vts_01_1.vob}. When i needed to do editing, , I use virtual dub.

I am trying your setups, the only problem is the audio and I can't seem to get to mpa2wav from the link.

Is there anywhere else the file can be found.

thanks

Hi gbon:

You can use headac3he for that purpose too. It will open .mpa and .mp2 files, and convert them to WAV.
