When capturing (WinTVGO 640x480), MJPEG (1 to produce fully compliant VCD, should I deinterlace, and, if so, how?

I use KVCD templates for my Cyberhome, but have to produce some compliant VCD's for use on other machines.

I usually used Sefy's 352x240 NTSC MPEG-1 TMPGEnc template with 44 audio and burn with NERO. I'm trying to reduce the horizonal screen lines while staying fully compliant.

I normally just use FieldDeinterlace() to deinterlace.

"DecombLegacy.dll", included in MovieStacker.

Hi nicksteel,

If you want to produce a fully compliant VCD, you can just use the standard VCD templates included with TMPEG. However, if you want to produce a standard VCD, but with superior quality and less blocks on low lit/low action scenes, do this:

Load KVCD LBR or KVCD 352x240 PLUS and change the encoding from CQ to CBR and set it to 1,150Kbps. Then check that your audio is set to 44.1Khz. Now you can encode and have a fully compliant VCD with KVCD's matrix and GOP as a bonus, with quality second to none

Will try tonight. Don't know what I'd do without you.

I assume I will not need to deinterlace? (I'm capturing from TV cable)

Also, can I change to 29.97?

Also, should I mux with BBMPEG with the same settings I use for KVCDx3?

Yes, forgot about that . If your material is already interlaced, change the frame rate to 29.97. If it's interlaced, but the original is a movie (FILM) and has been telecine'd, then you should IVTC and encode ad 23.976. You're going to have to find that out to see what the material is

Probably a stupid question, but how do I determine if a TV captured to AVI was originally FILM? I understand that all my TV card captures will be captured as interlaced, regardless of their being FILM or not. I did sucessfully Telecide()/Decimate() a capture of DUNE 2, but just figured it was FILM. I have no idea about other programs, like Futurama, Have Gun Will Travel, etc. Is there a utility available that can detect this, rather that having to visually check test encodes of each capture?

Thanks in advance

Sadly, you're going to have to do a couple of test strips, and use TMPEG to find out what your source is. If you encode a small clip with Telecide() and Decimate() at 23.976, and the result is jumpy and not smooth, you know that the source was not FILM

When capturing audio at 44100 with my WinTVGO 190, I cannot find a codec listed that allows 224 kbps audio. Is there a codec I can download for this or convert in some manner? It does allow 192 kbps.

Hi nicksteel,

Why don't you capture your audio via your audio card

Hi nicksteel,

>> Why don't you capture your audio via your audio card

yes, I agree.. when you setup your capture, instead, connect your
VCRs or Cable TV's Audio Out to your Soundcard's Line In or Aux in
ports, and NOT to your WinTV-Go's Line In.

Unless you are capturing through your WinTV-GO's built-in TV-Tuner, then
you won't be able to perform the above - unless you want audio sync issues.

In other words, setup your capture so that you capture FROM your Cable
box or VCR, and from the VCR or Cable box'es Audio Out, connect directly
to your Soundcard instead, and forgore the ease of your built-in
TV-Tuner card's capture.

I have the WinTV-Go card in my 2nd pc (my main capture pc) and this is
how I have mine - capture VCR and Satellite (when I do - I have the ADVC-100)

I've evidently confused the issue by not saying that my cable connects directly to the card (I have no cable box).

Anyway, I think my ignorance of TMPGEnc has created much of my confusion. When I capture with WinTVGO 190, I am forced to do mono sound. I do not compress the audio.

I investigated TMPGEnc last night and discovered that the max bps is 192 for mono. I changed to stereo and was able to select 224 and produce a compliant VCD with Kwag's 352x240 PLUS template.

I do need advice concerning settings. I have no choice with VirtualVCD's PCM's max audio setting of 192 mono.

Am I doing the right thing when I choose stereo/224 in TMPGEnc?
I need the 224 for compliance, but are there better settings or methods to achieve this?
Would TMPGEnc "Dual channel" or "Joint-stereo" be better with my mono input?

Sorry about all the questions, but I need to learn the best way to do all this.

Hi!

I have a one hi-res (704xsmthg) interlaced divx on my HD : it looks like crap on my PC Monitor (combing), but looks perfect on my TV. I don't bother, because I never watch movies on my monitor

I assume that an interlaced VCD will play ok on a TV (altough I have never encoded anything to interlaced VCD, because I read Kwag's forum )
Maybe you can give it a try (with no garantee).
