What Capture Resolution for 352x240 Template?

hi kwag and Ztr,

I want to try out your new temp. for capturing my favorite tv show- Jerry Springer (jk). Should I capture at 352 x 240 or is there some reason why I should stick with 352x480 then resize to 352x240?

Capture at 352x480. This way you get both fields. Then resize to 352x240.

well, most systems that have been rigged for capturing should handle at least 320x240 and higher. Without knowing what program you are using to capture, i would say capp at least D1, 352x480. Though unless you are converting to svcd or kdvd or kdvdvcdvhs, then switch to 720x480 or is your system can do it try 704x480. I tend to capp at least 480x480, 640x480, for svcd from vhs; and because i use avi_io i capture to 352x240 (when capturing say , a t.v. show), but only becuz avi_io has an option to capture or enable capturing 2 lines , or double lines, if capturing at 240. {or something to dat effect ,, i dont have the app in front of me}.

Again, depending on your pc, you'd capture at 29.97 (if it can't handle capping at 23.97) and then IVTC, inverse telecine your file to then encode at 23.97, if going to kvcd.

hey ztr,

I have been capturing @ 352x480 and then encoding at that resolution for a little while now and its been working pretty good (using Vdub at 29.97 fps). I tried capping at 720x480 but it was dropping frames by the truckloads. Since this has been working for me I'll stick with 352x480 and then resize down to 352x240 to try and reduce the file size a little.

I haven't tried AVI_IO yet- IYO is this prog better than Vdub for capturing? And what are the restrictions by not purchasing the full version?

my puter specs are P4 1600 win2k 80ghd WinTv go

Also I much more Vhs capturing than televison broadcasts and my vcr is getting kind of old now- would a new one with s-video outs (if they have em?) result in less frame droppage?

Damn,,,something's going on. My P4 allows me to capp at high rates, i.e. DvD sizes, 720x480, mpg2, @ 9.5 mbits, 224 audio, and i drop 0, zero frames, none, zilch, niente, nada. @ 10.0 bits i start dropping. If i cap at 352x480 at 23.9 or 29.9 i drop. Kinda why i stuck with avi_io.
The trial is limited to 4 or 12 gig or something like that. I liked it because it allowed me to capp segmented, easier than vdub, and would let me pause/resume, whereas vdub didnt, but i could always cut out the commercials on a tv capp afterwards. So i bought a copy of it. Now that im on ntfs, i can capp using 4 gig files segmented. I also use the MMC 7.6 with my ati card , and i can pause n resume and capp directly to mpg2 as well with .01% frame drop if any.

S-video would give you a cleaner transfer, yes. A new vcr, depending on how old your current K-vcr is, may introduce you to our friend - Macrovision. I sometimes capture dvd to mpg2 from one pc to another, using s-video, directly to svcd specs, just record, n burn.

I can capture tv shows at very high resolutions at 29.97 fr with no frame droppage at all- it's just when I cap vhs. I'm capturing a vhs music video right now and I from the beginning it has maintained a very consistent 6% frame droppage. So that's why I think I need a new vcr or the quality of the tapes I'm capturing is inferior. The problem is even worse on my 2 head vcr.

I'm really looking forward to seeing if it's possible to get 2 hrs of video capture onto 1 cdr with the 352x240 template!

obviously the better the vcr, the better playback your likely to get, hardware wise, specially with S- (S-Video)
The more movement, and lower quality of the vhs tapes,,the less effective a capp you'll get. e.g The old saying, GarbageIn-GarbageOut.
But try cleaning the heads with one of those solution, or cleaning kits, and fast forward fully, and rewind your tape fully before a capture. As well as , defrag, make sure dma is on, kill any tsr's etc.....

Again, depending on the quality of the capture, whether u ivtc it, how many passes if any, etc..., you may be able to get two hours on a cd. On a recent vhs capture, this movie looked good, as an svcd on two cds. i kvcd'd it to one, and though on the pc it was fine, it showed blocky on the tv. I just needed it to take along and play on my laptop, in the car.
