I recently purchased a WinTV Go card, and am trying to capture from it using VirtualDub. I followed the guide on the Luke's Video site, and everything seems to be in place, but when I go to start the capture, it displays a dialog stating 'Error 438: Error: No audio data captured. Check audio card settings', even though when previewing, audio is heard. I have tried plugging the VCR into the WinTV Go card and using the patch cable to send the audio to the line-in of the soundcard, and also simply plugging the VCR audio-out into the soundcard line-in.
I then get another dialog box telling me that 'AVIOutput: the system couldn't find the path specified', even though I selected it using the File/Set Capture File... dialog, and it does in fact exist.
I've been using the other, non-capture functions of VDub for months with no problems, but I've never been able to capture with it.
Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?

Thanks

I ran into this problem recently too and it was because something was muted in Windows. I wish I could remember exactly how I fixed the problem but I found the thread in vcdhelp. I think the line-in on my soundcard was muted--sorry this probably isn't much help.

Hi Scav !
I have the same prob with Avermedia 98 TVcard . When I use the avermedia original capture prog I get sound but not with VDub . Tryed some tips from web but no success.
Can't Get sound in VDub capture .
I think there is other device that affects capture process.
I'm not doing TVcaptures so I don't take care of this prob .
If u'll get any success please give me to know
THX

whenever i use vdub to capture, i always have to enable Capture Audio, and (win2k) change the settings of my audio card to Aux-In (double click the yellow speaker, lower hand check mark the box). the rest captures fine with my ati radeon.
Is your line-in or aux-in enabled?

I had my line-in enabled, but I tried switching the active audio line to Aux instead, but got the same errors.
What do you mean by 'whenever i use vdub to capture, i always have to enable Capture Audio'?? Enable Capture Audio in what tool or app? I can't find this function in Vdub, it seems to default to always capturing audio. At least, i see no toggle for Not capturing audio.
This is getting really frustrating because I purchased the card specifically so I could use Vdub to capture. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

hi scav,

I found this post at vcdhelp:
Quote:
this is off this webpage and helped me with audio problems but i had winTV card.

No audio in Virtualdub capture mode:
If there is no audio check that line in is not mute.(Double-click on the speaker icon in the tray and go to Options -> Properties -> Adjust volume for recording. Then you should be able to alter the volume of the line-in port.)

If it still doesn't work try to restart VirtualDub sometimes.

If you have a WinTV card try then to start the prog AudioSel.exe in the /wintv/ dir(or download it here), there you can choose TV Audio Source, if this doesnt work, you can restart virtualdub sometimes, or if you got the wintv/radio card, like I, you can choose radio audio source and this will work everytime /mrm

I've had the above problem and tried everything you said to get rid of it, but whatever i did nothing seemed to fix it..... until I went into control panel! I went into Control Panel, 'Multimedia'. Then under where it says 'Recording' I selected 'SB Live! Wave In (CC00)' instead of 'RSS Wave in Record' and the audio worked!!! [icon_smile.gif] /Stuart

I have an ATI AIW 128 Pro and a Sound Blaster Live in an AMD 800 128 Mb RAM and I get no sound. When you choose video source on Virtualdub, you´l find the same settings of your capture device and soft. Despite this settings are correct, CLICK AGAIN on them and ¡voila!. The sound apears and everything works.I hope this can be usefull. Bye from Spain
also do you have the btwincap drivers installed? I have this capture card too and it has been working great- except for my unexplained frame droppage problem

This may be card specific! I have a avermedia 98 and in Virtualdub the audio on/off is found under File/capture/video/source and in my case its called mute checked on or off.

When you check your line-in for the sound card make sure you are checking the one for "recording" not the one for "playback". You want to record from line-in if you jumped the audio out from your capture card to the line-in of your sound card. Caution also with sound cards that have multi use plug ports. Some cards if you have 5.1 speakers set to on then the line-in actually becomes a line-out for 1 set of speakers. So you may need to disable this feature and go to standard 2 speaker stereo.

Bman:

My apologies to the user of the original post who expects info on the wintv go card (or something like that) but some of this may indirectly apply.

I still use win98 so your OS may be a bit different:

Here is what you need to get the avermedia card to accept sound:

1) there should be 2 devices in your device manager for "sound video game controller" the first is for the video and the second for the audio
(ie Avermedia tv series device video section and Avermedia tv series device audio section. Check this first in case you are missing a driver go to their site for the latest update.
Then just follow what I said about a jumper cable from the audio output from your avermedia card to the input (line-in) of your sound card. Rest of the info I wrote earlier also applies and is critical. If you don't hear the sound through your speakers or earphones that means its not getting through. If you can hear it your sound card can hear it too. I know it works, I have captured with many versions of virtualdub, winvcr I and II , avi-io, flycap and every other cap app I ever tried and I use it all the time. I have changed my sound cards from a soundblaster 16, awe 32, a yamaha pci and a generic on board card. There is no valid reason that you can't capture sound with the avermedia. Do you have the tv app that comes with it and can you capture with that ( its not very good but you can use it to test)?

Well, I found and used the Audiosel.exe utility, and that may or may not have solved the problem, because as I rack up more attempts to use VDub for capturing, it seems to behave differently every time. In general, if I go through the Open Vdub/start capture/get error/closeVdub/re-start Vdub sequence about 5 or 6 times, it eventually starts to capture correctly. What a painful tool. Which is odd, because in it's non-capture functions, it's almost flawless.
Anyway, thanks for the help guys.

regarding the original post: I had this same problem again because I had to reformat my hd and it took about 2 hours to figure it out so I'm posting this for my own reference if I have this problem in the future (or anyone else)

I went into mixer -> sound recording -> line in

btw- using WinTV GO patched into line-in of SoundBlaster Live

also if there's no red and blue bars in the volume meter in VDub then it's not working right!!

this is not a vdub setting but a windows volume control setting

in volume control
click options
click properties
select Recording
make sure line in is ticked before clicking OK

click OK
you should now have Recording control as the active window
make sure Line In is ticked and the slider control is above zero
(set it full and do short test captures and then reduce it to an acceptable recording level)

of course for all this to work your wintv card audio output MUST be connected to your Line in Input of your soundcard (could your recording setting be at microphone perhaps????)

I use the wintvgo card with its audio output and capture with no problem
and also use alternate line in sources (for stereo output from cable TV)

I think Vdub is THE BEST software capture prog available

postscript - vdub will capture audio from whatever source is specified by volume control. when you do a capture - exit capture mode - load the capture file - then do save wav from the file menu - this will save the wav portion of the avi file which can be opened in mplayer and you will see it is the same length as the video file - if it is silent its because your recording control settings are wrong
