capturing TV cartoons, but get some hissing/static in the sound

I'm capturing TV cartoons and get some hissing/static in the sound.

I use a wintvgo card with virtualvcr for avi captures. The card is mono only. I have it set to 16/48000/stereo, but have also tried 16/48000/mono. I do not compress audio in virtualvcr.

I use BBMPEG to extract wav from AVI. The sound seems ok in BBMPEG.

I use Headac3he to make mp2 files.

:?: Any suggestions? Is there any way to post process the wav file?

GoldWave v5.05 has some nice noise reduction methods.

Find a short clip (less than a second will do) in the WAV file where the only audible thing is the noise you want to remove. Copy that clip to clipboard. Select the whole WAV file and choose Effect->Filter->Noise reduction. Then choose the 'use clipboard' radio button.

You can 'preview' the effect, if the noise is too strong, removing it may cause some weird artifacts in the destination so it's recommended to check the final result this way. Then just select OK and GoldWave will try to remove the noise by using the noise sample as the reduction envelope.

It is more of a distortion thing. When the there is no sound, there is no hiss. When sound occurs, it has this hiss sound mixed with the actual sound. It is not a loud hiss, but you can hear it.

Boulder post a great solution.

but only to remove my doubts:
when you listen the source have noises and distortions
or only after you encode?

"When the there is no sound, there is no hiss."
what is your audio board? can play 48k without noises?
(i had one audio board that don't like 48k ...give noises!)
overclocked cpus put noises in waves too..sometimes you loose the audio.

too much question!

The wav sounds ok. The mp2 has hiss. I am using Dual Channel, 128, Surround 2 in Headac3he. I am resampling to 44.1, but 48 has same results. All other Headac3he settings are defaults.

My capture board is mono, but I have virtualvcr set to stereo. No change if I capture in mono.

is not clear for me if your wave is
stereo( L/R - 2 mono channels) or mono(1 channel only)!
:?

if is stereo or mono(2 channels)
try Stereo,128,Surround..
Stereo and Surround are the defaults when you load the wave, don't?

Try a higher bitrate and see if it helps. Selecting 'surround' instead of 'surround2' may also help.

For any TV captures, I suggest using stereo instead of any other encoding method (joint stereo is a huge no-no  ).

I upped bitrate to 224 and got improved sound. 192 was better, but not as good as 224. I guess sound captures are not good enough to use 128 in some cases. I also used stereo/stereo in Headac3he.

:D Thanks guys!

Oh, I forgot to say, use tooLAME. It's better than mp2enc used by HeadAC3he. The folks at hydrogenaudio.org recommend it and those guys sure know everything regarding audio.

How do you Toolame and is there a GUI for it?

jorel 09-21-2003 12:41 PM

yes,Boulder,more hints about tooLAME please!

Boulder & nick,

The latest BeSweet beta (1.5b21) uses tooLAME.dll to encode. There's naturally a GUI for BeSweet and they can both be found here:

of course....believe,i had the new BeSweet and the GUI!

thanks Boulder!

One more tip: use psy model 2 with tooLAME
