New PVR-250

Anything I need to know before replacing my existing WinTVGO-90 with the PVR-250 into my HP 2.53 P4?

Are there hiccups I should expect and what is the best capture resolution for non-digital cable?

I notice that the Hauppauge site lists several new drivers and software updates. Has anyone installed them and how well do they work? I presently use WINDVD for playback.

Thanks in advance,

Nicksteel

Hi Nicksteel,

I still haven't actually tried my card yet :!:
I've been setting up "MythTV" in a Linux box, but the kernel doesn't have the WinTV PVR-250 drivers, so I haven't tried.
As you are running Windows, I suggest you go to Hauppauge's site and download the latest drivers. You might want to PM dano, because he uses this card extensively, and he might give you some pointers on it

I found my best results were with using the base cd install from www.shs.pvr
http://www.shspvr.com/download/hcw1_7_21177_pp2.zip

After you install the card point the "New Hardware Found Wizard" to the unzipped hcw1_7_21177_pp2 folder, it will detect the driver and install it. I capture using the preset of "12 Mbs CBR" and edit the commercials with virtualdub mpeg2-ac3 and extract the .wav at this point. I save the processing settings (.vcf) and use vcf2avs (search doom9 forums) and copy the "Trim" commands into my default MA script and change the source and sample length. I use dvd2avi 1.76 and encode audio with Headac3he. Good luck.

:D Thanks, I can start out this way with the latest stuff.

:?: Have you tried using Womble mpeg2vcr to trim and processing the output with DVD2AVI to produce d2v and ac3 files?

:?: Also, do you have a 2.52 script you can recommend?

Dano 10-02-2003 07:49 PM

I only use Womble on files I am not going to reencode. If you are going to reencode it is best to not alter the source and use Vdub instead, besides it is a much easier to use editor than Womble. If you can avoid it never edit the original mpeg, jus use dvd2avi to create the .d2v and delete the demux .mpa.

:?: On doom9, which do I use?
You can also use a utility called vcf2avs. It converts your processing file (vcf) to an avs file including the trims. For more information see AviSynth Q&A or vcf2avs by Dark$oul71 (discussion and download) and vcf2avs by bb (discussion and download). Btw those are not the same programs. They just have been developed at the same time and therefore somehow carry the same name!

:?: virtualdub mpeg2-ac3
Where can I get this? Is it two programs or one, as I cannot find it as one.

Dano 10-03-2003 09:42 AM

These are the versions I use.

:D Got the new card running easily with your advice. Downloaded virtualdub mpeg2-ac3 and vcf2avs.

Loaded capture in virtualdub mpeg2-ac3.
Deleted sections.
Saved wav for processing with Headac3he.
Saved processing settings.

Converted vcf to avs.

Loaded capture into DVD2AVI
Saved d2v

Loaded trim settings into avs

:?: Am I doing everything ok so far?

:?: What do you mean by: "change the source and sample length."

:?: Can you turn video display off while capturing?

:?: How do you turn WinTV2000 off after capture? WinTVScheduler doesn't allow me to uncheck "Keep WinTV Open When Done"

:?: Could you post your default MA script?

I only have:

LoadPlugin("c:\video\dlls\MPEG2DEC3.dll")
LoadPlugin("c:\video\dlls\decomb.dll")
LoadPlugin("c:\video\dlls\deen.dll")
LoadPlugin("c:\video\dlls\gripfit_yv12.dll")

I'm sure there is a reg setting but don't know where. Search the forums at www.shspvr.com.

Pretty much the default MA script.

Re: Dano, New PVR-250

Dano,

:D Just a thank you for all the pointers and advice.

Everything is running ok now. I really like the PVR-250. The quality is better than avi captures with the old WinTVgo-90, especially sound.

:?: Do you find that High Quality is better than Motion Estimate in TMPGEnc with MA and captures at 720x480? I've always had motion issues, but using KVCDx3 MPEG2 at 704x480 seems to have "cured" the problem and has very good quality.

kwag 10-06-2003 08:55 AM

Hey nicksteel,

Could you post a small MPEG sample somewhere :?: :D
( A sample before conversion, to see the captured quality )

Glad to. Will even post a small before and after. I'm doing Taken (SciFI) capture from non-digital cable. Could you tell me how to post a sample? Haven't ever done this, but need to know how. I am on modem.

You have to upload it somewhere. Like at angelfire.com or some other hosting. Doesn't your provider give you a default web page, which usually includes ~5mb or so :?:
