Transferring music videos from the 80s and 90s
 

Aside from dvd backups, I also am collecting music videos from the 80's and 90's. I usually capture these to mpg2.

Has anyone used the kvcd template for videoz? Just wondering what file size and quality would be like, and how many would fit using kvcd?

I also have a huge collection of videos, 60s-70-80-90-current. It is a kind of hobby for me ;)

Anyway: I tried the kvcd template on some videos and the quality was fair enough.
But if your source is VHS, then you need to play with interlace output, if you want the best possible picture. Mpeg 1 don't allow this...

KVCD is a good -x- solution for DVD progressive videos most.
Of course, that is my opinion. Others may have a different one.
Only you can judge, so test a bit: It want harm you!

Are your VHS videos FILM?. Because if they are, you can do Inverse Telecine to them and convert them back to the original 24fps they were shot.

Then you can encode at 23.976 progressive and there will be a huge difference in quality and compression.

hey KWAG. i was wondering about this.

currently, i am capturing 352x480 and running my capture thru avisynth capitalizing on the bob deinterlace filter, where my frame rate doubles at 59.941 fps and then encoding with your template back to 29.97 NTSC. works great, but sometimes i run into syncing issues. im thinking IVTC back to 24 fps might do a better job. what do you think?

i have no idea how to IVTC. is it easy or a pain? how is the process done?

how do you assume the original was shot in FILM?
i guess this doesnt apply to TV shows?

It applies to most TV shows too. I do IVTC in my "Stargate" episodes every week!.

The best way is to use the decomb.dll filter together with an AviSynth script.

but now i cant load my avs file into tmpgenc. it says "unsupported". hmmm. i can easily open the avs file in vdub. wtf? could i just frameserve thru vdub? but will that mess with the MJPEGcorrect filter cause it says vdub uses RGB?

Check your AviSynth installation. Make sure you have the latest. Grab it a www.videotools.net. It's AviSynth Beta 6.

kwag, I am from Europe, so my source is always PAL. We don't have inverse telecine, film etc here... We have to deal with interlace PAL all the time!.
Your template is amazing for NTSC and Fair for progressive pal from DVD sources.

In generall, I am not a fan of progressive picture if the source is interlaced PAL. That's why I like mpeg 2 and xvid than mpeg 1 or divx/asf.
That doesn't mean that I don't like your template! For R1 DVDs, your solution is a great alternative!

You'll see a huge difference in quality. Even for PAL.
