hello all!

i don't know if is my mistake but i read somewhere that we have a way to install XP without another system installed before....seems that you copy some archives in the hd and install XP,don't remember how or if is possible, then resuming:
do you have a way to install only XP in a brand new hd?
thanks!

Of cours yes. If you have an installation autoboot CD. You need configure your bios in such a form that your PC boot from CD.
I think another way, but I have not try it (and don't know if it will work). You can mount a second HD in your system, run your XP setup CD and select, when install program ask you, the installation folder as "your empty HD letter:\Windows. Once installed, you can take this HD and put it as Primary Master (don't forget change the jumper at Master position). This way could help you when you don't have a autoboot XP setup CD.
There is another way, if you need it, just let me know it, and I will post it.

You can have both OS, but you need to have 2 partitions even in same HD. First install XP, and later from inside XP, install W9x. System will ask you in what partition to install it. You can make a new partition in an easy way with "partition magic", software that has a "demo version".

@jorel,

I use Windows 2000 Pro (clean install) and I have no problems. I
choose FAT32, because some of the games I have don't play with NTFS.
I would never upgraded Windows 98 to Win2K, since Win2K is
really Win NT with more device compatibility than straight NT.
So, windows 2000 Pro works file

you don't have to have two partitions, but two partitions will make life easier(you save time working out instabilities, file versions, os swapping software, invalid filesystems etc...) and always install older OS first, because newer OS can detect older OSs. i.e. XP NTLoader detects win98 installed and automatically makes a menu for bootup selection.

as far as installing fresh...you can try either the single disk xp "fresh install" bootdisk or you can just use a win98 bootdisk with smartdrive(basically anything with cdrom support if im not mistaken) then go to cdrom:\i386\winnt.exe or something like that...

for bootdisks... http://www.drd.dyndns.org/fr_index.html?/disks.html

right, this is what i did a long time ago and was working, but using only the first partition for the systems and choosing in the boot, i will redo like that.
it's easy to make ghost images cos you can trash all un needed files from XP for short image and booting from 98se you can choose "prompt" and call ghost from another partition...i was clear in my *"confuse way"?
*"confuse way" but pratical (smart) !
reboot in 98se before the image and you can:
trash the "pagefile.sys" that is created every time you run XP and no compress in the image( round 760Mb),
defrag the partition using 98se(using the ME defrag) that defrag faster than XP
....and lots more little details!
very important: use fdisk from 98se and don't from XP or older systems don't work!

thanks for the link!
