FreeBSD: 'BTX halted' while installing FreeBSD...
Hi there,
A couple of months ago I downloaded and tried to install FreeBSD 5.2.1. At that time I ran into the same problem that is bugging me now a lot of times. But one way or the other, choosing from various options in the boot menu of the CD I managed to install BSD. Though I could not ever finish the installation due to another problem, I think. Now I downloaded and am trying to install FreeBSD 5.3beta. I'm just trying this 5.3beta because good old 5.2.1 doesn't seem to like my wireless keyboard&mouse. It's a Logitech wireless package that I bought with base station USB connection. So, I put 1st disc in the CDROM reader and power up the PC. Off it goes reading the kernel or something until it stops with a timed menu. I tried all the options in this menu but I keep getting the same message some moments later. Here's the message: Code:
/boot/kernel/acpi.ko text=0x40864 data=0x1be4+0x110c syms=[0x4+0x7300+0x4+0x9789] Some guys say that this is an ACPI problem and that it's solved by enabling or disabling the ACPI in the BIOS. Done that but still no luck :( Can somebody give me a hand? I never ran into problem on this PC with Windows or Linux so it would be a surprise if BSD is not compatible for any reason. Right now my hardware goes as follows: 1xAMD AthlonXP 2400+ 1xASRock Motherboard K7S8XE+ -- on board LAN+Audio 1xDDR333 512MB (unbranded) 1xWestern Digital 20GB Harddisk 1xSeagate 40GB Harddisk 1xLG DVDROM DRD8160B 1xLG DVDROM recorder GSA-4120B 1xVGA based on ATI Radeon 9200SE (unbranded) I have tested the whole system with other components only keeping the CPU+Motherboard and the results are similar only with FreeBSD Help :!:  |

Hi Karl,
Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly. This already happened with 5.2.1. Now, for some reason, with 5.2.1 I was hable to use the boot menu and get away with it. I just don't recall which option I had to choose. And I don't recall if the message was exactly the same, but I do remember 'BTX halted' too with 5.2.1. Maybe I'll find 5.2.1 CDs and give it a try again so I can tell you the exact message with that particular release. I just know that I've tried all the boot menu options with 5.3beta and that it just stops :( Thanks for the tip though. Cheers |
Hi Karl,
Now I can confirm it: I found 5.2.1 CDs and gave it a shot. And why didn't I get surprised when I also saw: Code:
ACPI autoload failed - no such file or directory I just can't find it for 5.3Beta... BTW check 5.2.1 1st errorlog line "no such file or directory". Would you believe that I'm missing the same file for 5.2.1 and 5.3Beta? Hardly truth, right? That would be one in a trillion  Even 'cause I downloaded the iso images for both releases ;-) Any help will be appreciated. Cheers |

I'll boot the CD and let you know :) Probably this error is related to AMD processors :?: -kwag |
Yeah
Maybe it's an AMD issue :!: But then it wouldn't help me much, would it? I mean, I only own AMD cpu PCs, now. If that's it, I hope they can fix it fast... Otherwise I'll abandon the BSD way and try Smoothwall or something based on Linux :( It's just that Smoothwall doesn't provide wireless access point features such as I could try with FreeBSD 8) But anyway, thanks for the tip. Cheers |
