Virus Problems in windows 2000 pro

@All,

HELPPPPPP.....
I was working on a friend's computer which has Win 2K Pro and
found 3 worms with many viruses. I used AVG anti-virus free to remove
as much as I could. I rebooted and now Windows keep rebooting
continuously. I tried safe mode and windows halts. I tried to boot
with the last good profile and it still reboots. I reinstalled Win 2K
with repair and still no luck. I checked MS Knowledge Base and it
recommends installing Win 2K in another directory and edit the
registry hkey_local_machine\system\controlSet001\control\cr ashcontrol
change the value of the CrashDumpEnabled value to 1. This is suppost
to stop the automatic reboot when an error is encountered. With that
all done windows should display the error when it halts bootup.

I believe a number of OS system files were infected and removed by
AVG and windows needs a new install. Any comments or suggestions??

You said it all ! The system was corrupted in too sensitive areas and no antivirii program would have saved you.
Reformat and reinstall from scratch.

Note : it's always a good habit to have a little partition (8GB) for the system and the remainder of the disc for data. This way you never loose your data (and you can use norton ghost to save regulary your system).

Not so fast :!: :D
You can boot from the CD, and issue a "Repair" command.
This will restore all system files, and then you can boot again and download service patches, etc.

Thanks Kwag and Dialhot,

I bit the bullet and did a clean install of Win 2K. :) It took hours to load other
software (i.e. MS Office package, Anti-virus, firewall, etc.) and
when done I imaged the drive with Ghost. Now if a problem occurs
again the image backup will save the day. 8)
