I mean currently I have (real)VNC server on my PC at home. I use (real)VNC viewer from my office. With it I can also access to (real)VNC server on the PC of my foreign custumers. If I install ultravnc here and at my home, will I be abble to control my custumer's PCs ? Or do they have to install it also ? I really need to know that. Thanks. |

Usually our SMB customers have RealVNC server installed on their server systems. So, with UltraVNC viewer installed on my office workstation, I've been remotely managing customer systems for ~1,5 years. BUT, you won't take advantage of using UltraVNC viewer when you connect to a RealVNC server. So forget about encryption/file transfer/chat window/etc. And even forget the best part  the logical video driver used by UltraVNC viewer that provides low CPU usage on the VNC servers ;-) This is a must for low end old workstations like PIII500's that some of our customers still use. Downsides of UltraVNC  it's being developed only for usage under M$ Windows  . No Linux/BSD compatibility... As for VPN, I can only say that OpenVPN has been credited as the best VPN product by severall entities. Still, I haven't given a shot at configuring OpenVPN at the office because it's based on "certificate-based public key" encryption and it's a bit complicated. Take a look here http://openvpn.net/ A nice GUI for Windows here http://openvpn.se/ And another GUI for Windows here http://sourceforge.net/projects/openvpnadmin/ Edited Downsides for OpenVPN: there is still no Pocket PC client software. But the same applies for real IPSec (I'm not talking about M$ horse sh*t L2TP that they call IPSec). Edited Downsides for IPSec/L2TP: big known vulnerability still under investigation... Downsides for PPTP: That is not real encryption . Good way of protecting yourself at home: http://m0n0.ch/wall/ That's a Firewall and VPN server running under FreeBSD 5.4. Then you can install m0n0wall on a Soekris box http://www.soekris.com/. This one is a very small PC appliance running on very low voltage consumption. Edited m0n0wall/pfSense are also known to run very well on Nexcom mid-end product appliances http://www.nexcom.com.tw/0330/nexweb...=Prod*10000124 Edited Remember that m0n0wall is all configured with web browser and that it currently supports VPN server for PPTP/IPSec and OpenVPN in beta stage. It's the best low end router that I've seen appart from http://www.pfsense.com/ which is actually a fork of m0n0wall. It can also run on a Soekris box although it could use some more stamina... pfSense will be the "de facto" router/firewall/vpn server of the near future. It has plugins for everything you can think of and it will even be able to work in a cluster environment configuration. It even supports DiffServ QoS for VoIP applications in your LAN/LAN or LAN/WAN. Unfortunately it is still in beta stage around 0.70. Soon they will close the new features and start killing the bugs for the launch of 1.0 latter during this year. Now go play VPN/remote managing kids . Cheers |

RealVNC took automatically the new adress. |
Phil...I'm affraid I don't quite understand what VNC (Real or Ultra or whatever) would have anything to do with auto IP change from the ISP.
If your IP changed you have to point any VNC viewer to the new address as long as you know it. Otherwise run a good DynDNS tool and go for name instead of IP. Preferably one which doesn't suffer from exploits. Otherwise I may have misunderstood you. Cheers |

Today this adress has changed and the evening I will check again the log to see if it still reports the previous IO. It seems to me that the IP served is took when you launch winVNC and is not updated afterwards. EDIT: OK, my fault. That was the rules in my firewall that I forgot to update to tell what was owner of port 5800 now :( |
There you go.
Gotta keep an eye on those rules all the time :). It has happened to me many times already. I hope you'll re-try UltraVNC and I also hope it will work as good for you as it has worked for me - so far ;-). Cheers |
I wanted to use UltraVNC because I wanted to test RB-Farm to test out the multi PC movie processing and I could launch the RB-Farm in the other room via my LAN without leaving my RB-Farm serving PC.
I did a test with RB-Farm and it halfed the encoding time unfortunately I got a buffer underun Problem from RB Pro on the Rebuild stage but I don't think RB-Farm was to blame for that maybe a setting in DVD-RB I did wrong. Sorry for the OT. |
Btw, I'm using XP Pro. Do I have to tick configure MS Logon II & Configure Admin Properties?
Thanks for the help guys. EDIT: Also does the software need installing on both machines or is there just a simple viewer to download for the remote PC accessing the Server PC? |
Are these softwares better than PCAnywhere, and other commercial softwares? Take it so much resources as PCAnywhere does?

Maybe 4 to 8% of your CPU under heavy load. Quote:
But where ever you click the dot, even before the mouse pointer reaches it, the mouse event will be acknowledged. -kwag |
