Is there any advantage over XP Home for a home machine?

Hi nicksteel,

Not really
You only get some additional service on the Prof. version.
So if you intend to use it as a home OS, then XP home edition is just fine.

XP Home sucks, especially if you have a home network, it is too restrictive compared to the Pro version.

When I order a new PC I always specify that I am willing the pay the extra for XP Pro it is well worth for me at least.

Are you sure Michael
Because the TCP/IP stack is identical in both versions!
Or is it that there are some wireless utilities in the professional version that I'm not aware of

Hi Karl,

It is more to do with security with Networking, on the home edition you can only have the simple file sharing when sharing folders over a network, but on the Pro version you can have password protected folders.

This is what made me change.

Just a little more thing : a basic "default" installation of XP Home takes twice more space on the HD than the same on Pro. Simply because of all the themes and sounds that are installed for nothing.

True Phil, I forgot about all that extra nonsense that XP Home installs.

Yes indeed Phil, these are some of the things that helped me decide which version to choose.

Out of curiousity has any one used Remote Desktop on XP Pro?

I have a couple of PC's on my home network and I wanted to be able to remotely control my other PC over the LAN.

I just wanted to know just how secure it is, both machines run Kerio Firewall im just nervous that maybe this could exploited by a hacker?

Can anyone put my mind at ease before using it?

Sorry for the OT btw.

Sorry for hijacking this topic but I promise this is the last off-topic question.

I was going to use TightVNC would you recommend that Phil?

Again sorry for the off-topic

I don't know it. I use RealVNC. Note that I often use VNC to teleassist my custumers in Galway and sometimes in Ottawa. Thus I can consider that as secure else Nortel (my company) would have turn off the protocol from the firewall (as it does for MSN, but that's an other story).

That is excellent news Karl, thank you very much for this recommendation I shall definately test this one out.

I wanted to use this to control my other PC over the LAN and wanted to test RB-Farm and start the 2nd PC remotely, this tool will help me loads.

The file transfer mode sounds awesome also, thanks again.
