Private Server for my movie collection.
Im making a server just for my movie and tv collection. What i mean by private is that in no way does it have access to the internet. Im using this to house all my tv series and a number of movies. I have purchased 4 WD 300g hard drives to accompany all the dvds i have. Well the question i was wondering is what is the best compression method i should use to get the most out of my space. One reason im doing this is i have over 300 dvds and serious the maintance of keeping those together is getting overwhelming. Especially when the wife accidently puts the disc in a case and going through all those just to find that disc is horrible. Also im unsure if im going to make this a linux server or not. If any of you have done this please fill me in on what programs and encoding you used.
Thanks a lot Branden |

Thanks im trying it out right now. Hopefully my xbox can play these files or else im just going to have to wait to build my final pvr pc with windows media center to playback these puppies. Im just looking to see what kinda compression i can get. THank you i remember seeing this program awhile back and just forgot about it. Thank goodness i dont have to resort to divx.

You can just use DVDShrink, the size gain will be big enought for the majority of your disc.

And for really squeezing your movies, saving space, and keeping good quality, I would take a look at x264 encoding.
Maybe not the better option, as it doesn't backup your DVDs as ratDVD or DVDshrink do. But to keep main film and audio and subtitle tracks... |

Thanks for the additional suggestions. Ive tried out ratdvd and it has some awesome features like the imdb data download and injection. But the downfall of ratdvd for me is the inability for xbmc so play it for me. Which would require me to build another pc and i priced everything out and it would cost me about 400 dollars which isnt bad but getting married and the finishing touches of college is kinda expensive. Im really going to look into this x264 encoding see what the compression is and one awesome thing about it, apparently its able to be played back in xbmc. RV10 and TheFilmMachine i am looking at now cause i do like the save all the audio and subtitles. So many options so i need to look at the strength and weakness as it pertains to my situation. Thank you very much.

Hold on ! I did a mistake in the name of the tool and I can't find the correct one right now :oops:
I'll come back ASAP. :x |

lol you know its going to take me days to experiment with all these. Real player media how is the quality vs compression on this. Cause i have never really heard of anyone doing real player conversions for their video library. Well a new toy to try out.

@heyitsme,
This codec test includes RV10 and was written in 2004: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/codecs-104-1.htm It presents some interesting comparsions :wink: -BP |
Just to tell that the problem for RV(9 or 10) is not in the codec, it is in the difficulty to read it. (MKV + necessity to have realplayer ou real altenative installed).
This can explain why it is not used by a lot of peoples. And that is also true for h264 despite the quality of the codec. |
well right now i have down conversion from ratdvd and h264 codec. I am waiting for filmshrink to finish to decide which is the best here. I think the h264 codec looks awesome for how small the file was and ratdvd was about 300 mb for basically the same quality but it had the menu and scene selection but i took out the extras. So the only downfall to ratdvd for me is no xbox playback while 264 and i believe rv10 does.

Wow i just got done encoding mountain men. I will tell you what i have never seen such good quality for a 1 hr and 40 min for a filesize of 18 megabytes. Yep apparently the 1 cd setting for was set to 17 mb and instead of 700mb. So now for a real encode. BTW i could actually tell what things were in the movie. For instance a man with a beard and i think i saw a wagon wheel. Here we go again.

@heyitsme,
I also, have a large DVD collection and I'm thinking about doing what your doing. Creating a HD with instant access to the movies. I'm going to build a TVIO and this achrive would would be great :wink: Let me know your results with codec tests (e.i. h264, RV10, RatDVD, etc.) Thanks -BP |
Will do Black Prince. So far i think im kicking RV10 out of the Race. RV10 no matter how i increase the bit rate seems to get blocky for me at high action scenes. But then again it may be an error on my side. But h264 ive has some good results in. But if you find anything good out there as well make sure to let me know. BTW what kinda HD storage are you looking at.
Branden BTW im proud of my 100th post. Only took me what 3 years. And this is probaly the forum i look at the most. Which really doesnt say much for me. |
Congrats hihi :lol:.
