Adult Content Filtering Programs
 

@anyone,

At the request of several customers I embarked on finding a adult content filter for
children and didn’t realize how daunting this task would be. I spent hours googleing
and came up with some good finds but, there were cavets:

Commercial Adult Content Filters

Cybersitter – excellent features, blocks websites with sexual, violent, pictures blanked,
etc. Scheduled hours for internet use, email tracking reports, parent
password control, P2P blocking, etc. Problem is only one copy to one
computer. If you own other computers in your home, you must buy additional seats.
I tried their trial of 10 days and used Limewire to access prono material
and there was no filtering. Also, tried firefox, internet explorer, etc and it
still blocked adult websits. Price - $39.95

CyberPatrol – very good features, same as Cybersitter except no email reports.
Price - $39.95


Freeware Adult Content Filters

DogNet – Couldn’t get to any website. I never got to home page on startup and removed it.

ContentProtect – Same as DogNet. (wow) 8O They did warn it was slow to scan for adult
words, but an hour later no home page.


Open Source

I couldn't find a Windows adult filter programs, only for Linux, X OS, BSxx.
Some were excellent and had features that competed with Cybersitter.

Question: I like open source with its customizable adult filter databases and of course
the ability to use on multi computers without paying for extra licenses. Is there a
windows program that will fill this bill. :?:

How about using one of "The best of the best" :arrow: "Squidguard" :idea:

Install a FreeBSD machine on your client, then install "Squid" (wich is already in the ports collection), followed by installing "Squidguard (which is also in the ports), and there you go ;)
Then the whole network will be protected :)
And the system updates itself :cool:

Just install the machine with two network card, configure it as a firewall, hook it up between their broadband connection (cable modem, DSL modem, etc.) and their hub/switch, and all traffic in the school will be filtered "for free!" :cool:

SurfPass Home Edition 3 was a bust. The passwords somehow got messed
up and I tried to contact their support, but since it is free they wouldn't
help me out :twisted:

I found another FREE adult content filter which seemed to work ok:
"IProtectYou" has a basic version that fullfilled the needs of most
parents. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/iprotectyou.html This program
is user friendly, easy to add more blacklist words. It was
not as feature rich as Cybersitter or CyberPatrol, but was pretty good
in my view. Sometimes it blocked a email due to a few bad words in
the content and websites that had a few vulgar words, but on the whole
performed well. The other thing I liked about IProtectYou is the speed
of scanning and accessing approved sites. :)

I tried it (with IE), and it worked flawlessly :!:
I couldn't access ANY "nrop & kcuf" site (words inverted, on purpose :lol:) :!:
I did have a problem with Firefox, but I think it's my computer that's all screwed up.
NetDog is freeware, and it looks pretty amazing.
Let me know if you give it a shot :)
