Auido/Video possible over VNC?

I finally figured out how to run VNC to connect my laptop remotely to my home desktop through Hamachi (Thanks Kwag!).

But I have a question... Is there any way to remotely view video or hear audio files using either Real VNC or UltraVNC? I can't find an option on either one to allow to send audio/video to the remote computer.

Right now I can remotely open a media player, but the contents of the player window just show up as a black box on my remote laptop without any sound.

Thanks!

Not with the VNC. But with Windows Remote Desktop, yes! :)

Yes, RDP can do what you want.
But be carefull when you use it!
If you have the remote PC logged on it will try to open a second instance of the tools you have setup for "windows startup folder".
And it could get ugly ;).

Thanks - it is just me using the computer, so noone else should be logged on.

Doing some searching I found that UltraVNC actually does support video over VNC also by using a video driver add-on. There is a lot of talk on the UltraVNC forum of adding a sound driver as well, but development seems to have stalled over the past year.

No way, VNC is not cut out for this job.
What you want to do can only be accomplished by RDP.
Just be carefull with your startup programs or you could end up with memory leaks and blue screens all over the place.

Maybe not... but UltraVNC seems to to be doing a decent job at trying!

Trust me - I use UltraVNC every day on tenths of customers - UltraVNC is still far away from what you can do with RDP.
And don't expect uVNC audio support to come up anywhere soon...
But what exactly do you want to do?
Video streaming to more than one TV at the same time?
Or do you want a thin-client to be able to see some movies coming from a powerfull server?
If it's the second choice, I believe VLC is capable of what you want.

I'll have to check out VLC next!

Thanks!
