deleting vobs from hd

hi all

after i encode and burn a film i delete the vobs from hd.
after this the system freeze(sometimes) 8O
than i reboot the pc and "feel" the system slow :eeks: and i do a "scandisk".
scandisk "see" errors and ask if it will be corrected.
after click "yes",sometimes is ok,sometimes not (remains :Drunk: :eeks: ) ...

what is the better way to delete big files? :?

thanks in advance.

vhelp 02-23-2003 09:50 AM

Morning jorel,

I use to have this happin to me, and I couldn't figure out
why. I would run a windows SCANDISK, even the DOS CHKDSK,
but after a while, my disk would either hang or by VERY
slow in performance.

What I ended up doing is:
* run a theral (complete) scandisk and run a SURFACE check.
.. took ALL DAY to do 20gigs.

Turns out, I had some BAD (or semi bad) clusters, and in
the end, SCANDISK "X" them out, and all was fine again.

You see, on MY hd, there were a few of these so called,
semi-bad clusters, that they caused windows to constantly
check to see if THOSE areas were ok, then proceed to write
to them if it could.

Question:
* what's you hd size
* R U using one hd for movies/encodes, or
* do you have ONE hd partitioned to TWO ie, C: D:
* how old are your drive(s)

Maybe others here have a better idea ?

Welp, good luck, hope you get things straighten out.

thanks to help...

some observations:

"I use to have this happin to me, and I couldn't figure out
why."
me too.

"..* run a theral (complete) scandisk and run a SURFACE check.
.. took ALL DAY to do 20gigs."...(* what's you hd size )
my is 60gigs...loooooooong time! 8O

"...few of these so called,
semi-bad clusters, that they caused windows to ....if THOSE areas were ok, then proceed to write to them if it could." (* how old are your drive(s))
it's impossible(i think)...
it's a new one(14 days only) and got the same problem with the "old"(1 year)

"* R U using one hd for movies/encodes, or
* do you have ONE hd partitioned to TWO ie, C: D: "

twice: 8O
the first hd with c=10gig , d=50gig.
i have a"exernal box" with hd of 10gigs
that i use sometimes to encode.
when i use the box it's d: , and the second partition
of the first hd turn to e: !

using one or the two hds i have ever the same problem:
if i delete big files,i get errors.
sometimes if i delete first a little file with 5mb 0r 10 mb,
then i delete the vobs one by one....
and after this i clean the "recycled"
(sometimes) i don't get error!
:? strange,confuse and true!

:) thanks friend vhelp !

Hi again jorel,

Some more questions / comments:
-------------------------------
* Are you using the BLUE ribbin as supplied ??

* loose cable or older cable (ie, gray ribbin)

* other drives (not partitions) may be interfering with your main hd - the one
.. that is giving you the trouble.

* maybe, your partition(s) is corrupt. If it is, then you'll have to
.. repartition ALL, and reformat ALL, as well.

Here is a tipicle setup on my Main pc:
-------------------------------------
* 20gig as ONE partition, set to PRIMARY - - IDE0
* 30gig as ONE partition, set to SECONDARY - IDE0

* CD-RW as PRIMARY - IDE1
* DVD-ROM as SECONDARY - IDE1

The above seem to work fine for me. ben using this setup since I can remember.
I don't know if it's THE most effective method, but it does work for me.

BLUE ribbin = yes

"loose cable or older cable (ie, gray ribbin) .."
no, my work is repair eletronics(don't know the name in english)
for 30 years 8O and all is new and checked!

"maybe, your partition(s) is corrupt. ..."

ha, ha..

Maybe you SHOULD run a complete surfice scan on your hd after all.
When you finish your video encoding or projects, or let it run at night,
while you sleep.
It may turn out to be that you have developed BAD clusters " X " them out w/ a surface scan.

ok friend,
i was did it...and redo again,..
(tomorrow i redo, now i want to stay tune here! )!

as i say,the hd maxtor 60gig is a new one,
the hd maxtor 40gig have 1 year(feb 2002)
and the hd fujitsu 10gig has 3 years(more or less).

what do you think of the idea to delete in dos?

vhelp 02-23-2003 05:23 PM

 Idea  ..how about this..

if your drive (one w/ VOBs) is separate for THAT purpose only,
than how about re-formating just that drive ??

If you can do this, see if it works w/out giving your the same trouble.

i do it ever!
and give me the same trouble.
using one by one too.
if i turn out 2 hds and using only one,no matter how of them.

of course, this problem is only deleting huge files! :)

rendalunit 02-23-2003 08:16 PM

hi jorel,

here's a couple of ideas-
1. try emptying the recycle bin before you delete the VOBs- i don't know if this will help but it couldn't hurt

2. download PowerMax diagnostic utility from their website- it is very useful for checking hard drives- i've checked other makes of drives with it too.

Open a command (DOS) prompt.
Move (CD) to the directory where you want the files deleted. Ex: cd c:\mytemp\vobs
Type: Del *.* and BOOM!, it's all gone

jorel 02-23-2003 08:54 PM

thanks Kwag...
i try this too.

ps:
if it all don't work,i have to use my "secret" to correct the problem.

8O ,yes......BOOM!

after all friends trying to help
i got the solution:

make a folder called "delete",
cut and paste all vobs, mpegs, everything what you want to "trash"
rename to a simple name.....example: 1.vob , 2.vob ,etc ,cos
is easy to read in dos.
reboot in dos,
change to "delete" folder,
Type: Del *.* ........BOOM! 8O (this emoticon could be "smoked" )

all is gone and don't get error!
it's safe and faster! the system feels .... :) :hopline:

thank you all! :D :D :D :D thanks !!!!!

ps:
Kwag,we need a emoticon with "explosion"!
