Right now, I would buy the Abit NF-7 Revison or the Epox 8RDA+ Mainboards.
As the processor i would take an Athlon 1700+ T-Bred with JIUHB stepping (very important) You better buy a good cooler with high performance. The good things about the Athlon 1700+ T-Bred with JIUHB stepping are the price (very cheap) and capabilty of very easy overclocking.But be sure to take one of the Mainboard I suggested. You can overclock a Athlon 1700+ up to 2600+ or even 2800+, without any special cooling, anyway would not take the cheapest cooler. But it MUST have T-BRED core and it MUST have the JIUHB stepping. The overclocking is very,very easy. Just have to increase the CPU Voltage,the FSB(Front side bus) and the multiplicator. You can make all those settings in the BIOS. In Germany an Athlon 1700+ T-Bred with JIUHB costs only 60 € (66 US $) and the Abit NF-7 Rev.2 only 110€ (120 US $). That combinations kicks Intel Pentiums ass. |
Dammmmmmmmmmmmm,
i just came back from the store after buying some parts,,wish i had read your post before. i picked up an athlon 1800 and an Asus A7V8X-V,,, shite,,,,,is this board overclockable, would u know? i like the oc' idea....my next pc i mod will be watercooled fer sure.... ztr |

You also need good RAM to be able to raise the FSB enough to make a difference. |

And it's better to keep the Multiplicator low and increase the FSB, anyway. Quote:

@Zooter
The Boards with the Nforce 2 Chipset are way better und more stable than the Boards with the VIA Chipset. The Board, which you have buyed (Asus A7V8X) has the VIA Chipset KT400. With that Board, Overclocking doesn't make much Sense, because of the instability. As you know I'd recommend following Boards: Epox 8RDA+ ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Abit NF-7 Rev.2 |

im gonna try to pawn this mobo off to one of my customers :lol: :lol: and get the A7N8X,,,,though ive heard good things about the epox one too..... i still kinda prefer intel, or at least have always bought into their marketing...specially since hooking up a colleague's 2.6 p4,,,82 fps on vdub w/ divx ..... but some of the benchmarks im on some athlons--and dang man,,, they come close if not beat some p4's.. thanx again zooter |
