Low Budget good perfomance

What would be the best AMD Motherboard n CPU combo
taking in consideration performance & Budget :?:

kwag 06-13-2003 09:50 PM

ASUS  http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=...eluxe&langs=09
Just an idea 8)

The Best would be Abit Nf-7 + Athlon XP 1700+ with T-Bred Core and the JIUHB stepping. With some overclocking, you'll have a 2000 Mhz (Or even More) Machine for a very small amount of money. The Overclocking is also very easy, because you don't need to manipulate the processor with your hands (unlock). Just raise the FSB or the Multiplicator and also the Voltage.

Another Mainboards, that I reccomend are:

Epox 8RDA+

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe

I have Epox 8RDA motherboard, do you know where to get simple overclocking guides?

Hi Bchteam,
I got the Athon xp 1700+, but i suppose you mean with
a 400Mhz FSB Board to be able to overclock, that would mean
i would need a better cooling system for my CPU n its so hot hear
in P.R. that im not sure that overclocking that much is a good Idea,
however im not an expert on this, so will see.

thanx man

yeah , rub it in,,,,
we're having a really shittical summer, if we can call it that, {up here in canada}.

I picked up a decent mobo, Elite K7S5A-Pro, $ 85.00 cdn, {'bout $ 55 +- U.S.D} for my sons' pc. He just needs a basic system to play some edutainment games, surf, mini-kvcd etc.... amd's were cheap too, 90$ cdn for a 1900+... decent combo...

If its really hot down there, para ustedes pobrecitos soportando tanto calor,  , ya could try WaterCooling your rig...
would help with temps...or just throw in some new fans...i have a ton lying around, i can send ya some ... :)

Fan.... I got a couple on it alerady, and the water cooler sounds
like a mail order thing, since i dont thing you can get it down here
but im not sure maybe Kwag Knows more since he probably has
acounts with some of them computer stores in the Capital 8) ; and yes
the K7S5A is a solid nonexpensive motherboard, but the only problem
is that is not very upgradeable, however the Asus A7N8X deluxe that
Kwag posted is very upgradeable and for a $128 Board that ainght
to bad, so i kind of like that, but 4 now ill squeeze the juice out of
my K7S5A n xp1700+ combo. :D

For a good motherboard for AMD (Since I never used Intel) go to nforcershq.com, Nvidia nforce2 is probably the best AMD chipset out there for AMD and it supports the 400 MHz FSB CPUs. The best motherboard for price and overclocking should be Abit nf7-s 2.0(I found it 123 at newegg) for, but newer boards like gigabyte might be better just look at the form for reviews. And for water cooling I wouldn't go for it because the reviews I heard that a good heatsink and fan will just do the same and will save you lots $$$$ of money. For a good cheap fan and heatsink the works great get CoolerMaster HCC-001 it’s loud but will keep things really cold.

kwag 06-16-2003 04:39 PM

Is your CPU a little "Caliente" :?: Well, put that extra heat to good use  http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/CPU_2...amp#1042687913

8) You got a good deal there, cause the lowest i seen it in the net
is around $123, let me now how it performs.

I just checked in here actually cause ive got this board on order was wondering if it would get mentioned or not , im curious to see how the NForce chipset performs and if it makes any differnce to speed.

Kwag is correct...

Kwag's suggestion is not just an idea...

It is correct.

Asus A7N8X and the Athlon 2500+. (Make sure it is the "Barton").

Also, if you get PC 3200 RAM (or excellent PC 2700) you have quite a bit of headroom to overclock before you even attempt to unlock the processor.

I may not know very much about video encoding (which is why I am on here and so greatful to the experts)...

But I know hardware.

Every so many months there is a "sweet spot". The first one I remember was the Celeron 300A. It was very overclockable and could run SMP natively.

Right now the sweetspot is the Asus A7N8X-Deluxe (nForce2) and the 2500+ Barton. I am still amazed how cheap the Barton 2500+ is:

http://www.krex.com/ppmain.asp

If you can grab one of the WD 100 GB drives that are really 120GB 8MB cache drives packaged as 100GB + 20GB free drives... (They were at Best Buy the last 3 weeks but you had to search for the right product numbers to buy).

Then you have quite a discount powerplant for encoding.

And I'll never forget that, because I had my 300A overclocked to 450Mhz and it never failed :)

You can get that combo Grantman right here http://www.adamant.com/main.asp :D I can wait to get mine hopefully
before Christmas

Asus A7N8X & Barton 2500 for $225
Asus A7N8X Deluxe & Barton 2500 for $249

actually that was the Athlon xp with Barton is probably less
here on a local store i can get a Barton 2500 for $125 buck and
that is expensive compare to U.S. prices.

Kwag... were you into the BP6

Wait a second... I am holding back my tears... :(

I had 2 Celeron 300As in my BP6. They went to 450 no problem. I then wasted way too much time and money on cooling to get them a notch over 500.

I had the original 1Ghz machine back when we did not really think 1 Ghz was realistic.

Add to that my VooDoo 3500 (with TV capture). Damn that was a great rig. I could play Unreal Tournament when it first came out at over 30 fps at 640 x 480 with medium detail.

I really miss that machine. The original ATA66 hard drives (40 GB just came out). 4x128 MB PC 100 cosair memory.

And the creme de le creme...

The Smart and Friendly 2x SCSI CDR. I snagged an Adaptec 2940 out of a Compaq server and could burn 5-6 out of 10 discs. They only took 35 minutes each, (No way 4x ever worked). 8O :D

Blanks were $2-3 each. :o

I flashed the BIOS once a week with cracked BIOS versions looking for one more Mhz.

It is so depressing looking back. :)

Mainly because of the amount of money and time invested. :x

Now I waste all that time waiting for my TMPGEnc projects to finish. At least I can watch NYPD Blue while I am waiting.

I have A7N8X-Deluxe

I have been running the Asus A7N8X-Deluxe since late October 2002.

I only have an Athlon 2200+ (but I won it at an AMD road show so it has sentimental value).

The board is absolutely great. The only issues were early issues with BIOS and drivers not being mature enough. I had the board way too early.

Since January I have not had any hardware related issues at all. (Definately a record).

I am very hard on my hardware. I pull out parts while it is running and constantly swap components. The board is rock solid and very configurable.

Here is my setup:

Asus A7N8X-Deluxe
AMD Athlon XP 2200+
(2) 256MB DDR 2700 Dual Channel Memory (512MB Total)
(3) WD 80MB w/8MB cache hard drives. (All on ATA133 controller).
(1) Liteon 40x16x48 CD-R (BIOS upgraded to 48x16x48)
NO SATA connections
GeForce 4Ti 4400 (Overclocked to 615/325)

I use the onboard audio (which is better quality than my Creative SB Live! ever was!).

BTW - I NEVER overclock when encoding. Even if things appear to be running smooth you can too easily introduce errors by running too fast or too hot. Just because you don't get errors does not mean you can't have issues with high CPU useage applications).

While I am at it...

It takes 35 minutes to encode 21 minutes of MPEG2 using the current Optimal Script unmodified. This is using the KVCD3 but at 480x480. (Add Pixie Dust and it goes to 2:30:00.

Grantman

P.S. We should start a speed test on a standard clip, standard template, standard settings.

Yes I cry too
I had the BP6 too, and what a hell of a motherboard it was :!:
I never exceeded 450Mhz though. That board was still around about 3 months ago
I still have a working dual Pentium III 500Mhz on the shelf :D
I also sent to the trashcan yesterday, my old Digital Alpha 233Mhz , which I had running NetBSD for quite a long time. It finally gave up. I got that machine at Ebay for ~$300.00 a couple of years ago. I'm about to get a SUN SPARC just for the hell of it :). I've always used FreeBSD on my customers, but for the past couple of years, I've had a sweet spot for NetBSD, because as they say "If the ass had a MicroProcessor, It would be running NetBSD"
Really, it's a great OS. I just trashed my Linux based (IpCop) firewall some days ago, and my firewall is now NetBSD 1.6.1 with IPFilter highly tunned. Nobody can get in my network :!: It's totally secured

Well the boards up and running at last, i got myself a WD 200 gig its been bad :( first one messed up , im on the second one now and its having trouble also, do you know of a problem with the a7n8x accetping larger HDD ? over the 136 gig barrier, the bios sees it all fine but windows (XP) seems to have trouble.

Over all its awesome, getting encodes in just faster than real time frameserving thru avisynth to tmpgenc at high quality :) and my ram is only 2100 got a gig of it though lol.

have you read about the new intel 4 2.4 C i think it is, its been clocked upto 3.6 gig but Windows got a bit buggy so they put it back to 3.3 gig and it was totally stable, those things cost around the 3 hundred mark, want to talk about sweet spots theres one there.
