Jorel:

I do not know too much about Internet protocols, etc. but have one question:
Are you hooked up to the internet via broadband CATV's? DSL?
I have a broadband CATV connection, and am using a cable/dsl router to connect 2 computers to the network, and to the best of my understanding that router has a firewall of sorts.

For Windows protection:
ZoneAlarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

If you have a spare PC laying around the house, and you want to connect your machine, your wife's machine and your kid's machine all simultaneously, look no further that this:
IPCop: http://www.ipcop.org

Then, if you are a Unix hacker, and you want to "hand carve" your firewall (like me ;) ), use this: www.netbsd.org or www.freebsd.org

ZA is too heavy and do not have a lot of good results for the price.
The best one (and free !) is Kerio Personnal Firewall.

I used to have Norton FW but I dropped it when I saw that its impact on the network bandwith was huge (23% !)

See benchmark there and make you choice Jorel.

Note: the link is out of order at the moment, I hope is temporaly.

thank you too Phil :!:

the link is working very fine.(firewall.net)

Sorry, I didn't remember the site was in french. But all you have to see in the benchmark results is the section G, where all the part are noted from 0 to 20, 20 is the best.

You'll see that Kerio has the best overall note (15.04/20).

If you need some hints, ask me.

Jo,
I heard good things from Tiny Firewall.

I still run BlackIce and AtGuard even on my one XP rig....
good and trustworthy. Coupled with the cable router, seems to work well.
I have no use to open ports for gaming or file sharing so, from my experience, they work well.
Mind you, I may try linux on my HTPC soon too...

That is a problem exposed the 16th of July, and there is of course a patch for this on widows update site.

I urge you to take it as there is already a lot a worms (kind of virus) all around the underground place (you know, the crackers neat) using this leak.

Note: if you have error when using clipboard (copy/paste), then its too late for you...

Just dont get caught with your pants down like I did..got hit with 6 trojans at once, I've spent the whole day redoing and getting it back to the way it was. They went right through McAFEE like butter. Needles to say I went back to Nortons.
