Hard Drive with seek error

@Anyone,

Just bought a bunch of Hard Drives (Maxtors, Quantum, etc) with
DOD degaussed lables which are reporting seek errors on
boot-up. Is there any way these drives can be re-used or have I
been taken

Hi black prince,

Get a low level formatting utility, and use it on the drives.
This will mark all bad sectors, and flag them as unuseable. Then you should have no problems.
Keep in mind that if the total bad space of the drive after being low level formatted is above 5% to 6%, then consider that drive bad :!:

Hi Kwag,

Thanks for the quick response. I downloaded MAXLLF.exe
and tried a low level format on a 20GB Maxtor drive
and kept getting...Divide Error. So I contacted Maxtor
and their answer was that firmware installed on all their
hard drives is used at system boot-up to identify the HD
with information such as manufactor, model, serial number,
cyclinders, sectors, etc. They say, if the degaussed used was
strong enough it probably destroyed the firmware in addition
to erasing the data part of the drive. In short, they claim
the drive is worthless. Well, I learned another lesson about
if it's too good to be true
