god there are so many x-vid codecs

i have been having a few encoding problems with some xvid files

can someone tell me what the differance between
Nic's xvid codec and other xvid codec's
Sometimes i get the bframe lag error when trying to encode.- which
i understand is because i havent had Nic's codec installed

If you have more than one type of xvid codec installed is the appropriate
codec chosen when you come to encode

Is there not any xvid codecs that are compatible with previous
xvid codecs

What are the essential Xvid codecs to have installed on your system

Thanx guys

Basicaly Nic's relaese is older than Koepie's last one (the only one that is numeroted 1.0 !). It is supposed to have more problems, but in fact for decoding purpose only (as we just need), it has NONE. And particulary, it does not have this first "bad frame" error that is annoying.

only information:
last Koepi's XviD-1.0.1-05062004

http://www.roeder.goe.net/cgi-bin/fe...1-05062004.exe

Changelog:

(core) small trellis bug which probably reduced sharpness of the image, but possibly even produced artifacts
- (core) motion estimation buglet slightly reduced b-frame's quality
- (core) 1 fps files failed to decode
- (core) intra coefficients were sometimes not clipped correctly, which might (in theory) produce artifacts (don't worry, noone has seen the artifacts yet)
- (core) if two p-frames were more than one second apart, b-frames in between are not decoded
- (VfW) video was not playable via ICM (mplay32.exe, files embedded in Office applications etc)
- (VfW) calculator did not open many useful audio/subs extensions by default
- (VfW) calculator calculated audio size wrong when given bitrate and length (2.4% error)

Should i only have one format/type of xvid codec installed
or does it do no harm to have more than one

how will encoders / decoders know which one to choose

Thanx

They all install a file that has the same name so you can install the number you want, you will still have ONE on your system.

Thanx Dialhot

So i presume when i install one it overwrites the other

So if i have issues with one sort of Xvid codec i can install another over the top to try and resolve the issue

I read in another thread about something called Gspot does this
tell you what codec version etc is being used on a file

Thanx in advance

No but it tells you where is the exact file for this codec. That is how you can see than Xvid always leads to the same faile, whatever the version you installed.

Toi know your version, there is always a config box for the codec with an "about"' button (or text zone) that will give you this info
