Okay guys, i'm just testing out the waters of Mencode-ME and Packshot, having become a CCE and Tmpgenc expert. What most confuses me is, where are the Quality settings for this encoder? This is usually the number I fiddle around when I'm worrying about file prediction and the like. I'm afraid I'm just too new to this engine to figure it out right now!

Hi J-Wo,

There's no CQ in mencoder.
The best quality is achieved using 2-pass with this encoder.
There's no need to do file prediction.
Use CalcuMatic to get your correct average bitrate, if you want to encode with your own scrips.
Else, try MencodeME or PackShot, which fully automate the process

thanks Kwag. I'm not sure I fully understand but... i'll do a bit more fooling around and ask more questions later

I gave Mencode-ME a try with an AVI file using its AVI settings. I noticed that Packshot has no predefined templates but instead lets you set the filtering yourself. Are there any suggested settings for Packshot and AVI files? What about DVD source? Thanks!

The ones I'm using are giving me good results.
This is the filters I'm using : hqdn3d,sab=.5:.5:1,noise=1th

That's what I'm using (testing!) for DVD sources. Give it a try

But use it after scale and crop and before expand options.
Isn't it Kwag?

Oh gosh that seems to have confused me... are these settings easily accessible from the Packshot or Mencode-ME GUI? And will these settings work for AVI?

BTW, what is so special about Mencoder? It seems that since we have to do 2-pass encodes seem to take a lot longer than my previous CCE encodes. And my first test with Mencode-ME on an AVI file really didn't look that good -- it also produced a lot of strange, bright green artifacts like that produced by digital signal noise. Very strange!

Hi J-Wo: It happens that for now mencoder.exe as it, a command line utility, is a tool for advanced users. Setting, in this sense, must to be writed down in a batch file or in a temp.conf file.
Then you need to learn mencoder.exe reading all about it in this forum and in http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/man/en/manpage.html
The settings that Kwag give you are for DVD sources.
For avi sources you can use MencodeMe standard loading avi direct on it, or trough MakeAvis from an avs script.

Yes, of course.
All filtering goes between cropping/scaling and expanding.

Kwag - a quick question.

How important is hqdn and sab?

If you're starting from a good dvd source, it shouldn't be noisy anyway.
Maybe an old or crappola dvd?

I understand the 1th (add teeny tiny bit of hiquality temp noise, for the minbitrate thingy), but seems to me that the other two just take up time.

Especially sab, about 50% fps reduction.

Yes, so just reduce the values until you get the result you want.
The values I'm using are test values.

Not everyone can afford CCE or want to get through other means. I tried the software out a year or so ago and it was very picky crashing during some encodes. I know about CCE basic but that is just a waste of money for the lack of features. I use and like mencoder because I can finally start using linux to do video encodes and the quality is that at a great price I can't testify to mencode-me but there is a learning curve with mencoder using the filters and syntax.

This is a temp.conf file for an avi source generated by MencodeMe.
Code:
vf=yuvcsp,pp=hb:100:100/vb/dr,hqdn3d=10:0:5,scale=::0:0:7,crop=0:0:-1:-1,noise=5u,expand=480:576

lavcopts=vcodec=mpeg2video:vrc_eq=tex:vmax_b_frames=2:vrc_maxrate=2500:aspect=1.3333:keyint=24:vrc_buf_size=917:preme=2:precmp=2:vstrict=-1:autoaspect=1:scplx_mask=0.3:vqblur=0:mbqmin=1:vqmin=1:mbqmin=1:lmin=1:intra_matrix=8,9,12,22,26,27,29,34,9,10,14,26,27,29,34,37,12,14,18,27,29,34,37,38,22,26,27,31,36,37,38,40,26,27,29,36,39,38,40,48,27,29,34,37,38,40,48,58,29,34,37,38,40,48,58,69,34,37,38,40,48,58,69,79:inter_matrix=16,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,32,20,22,24,26,28,30,32,34,22,24,26,30,32,32,34,36,24,26,28,32,34,34,36,38,26,28,30,32,34,36,38,40,28,30,32,34,36,38,42,42,30,32,34,36,38,40,42,44
ofps=25
and the encode.bat
Code:
Mencoder.exe -include temp.conf -lavcopts vbitrate=2668:vpass=1 "C:\temp\MencodeMe\Samples\corte.avi" -o "/dev/null"
Mencoder.exe -include temp.conf -lavcopts vbitrate=2668:vpass=2 "C:\temp\MencodeMe\Samples\corte.avi" -o "C:\temp\MencodeMe\Samples\corte.mpv"
You need make your own general settings (scale, crop, expand, etc.)
