What resolution to make video file have 16:9 ratio?

Hi there guys...

I have a little question. I've been trying for some time to encode my video files with TMPGenc and I don't manage to find a video resolution that make it look like a wide screen...So this is my question: "What is the resolution that I need to make my video file as 16:9 ratio?"

I'll be glad if someone can help me...

:)

DO you mean that you want to encode in anamorphic mode ?
Give more information on what you are doing :!:

umm...Yes, It's exactly what I'm want to do though when I'm trying to change the aspect ratio in the settings I still get it on a full screen...So I figured that it must be something with the resolution...so...do you know what is the problem?

Let's take this from the start : describe the entire process you use : what is your source, do you use a script, and what is your target.

Note : anamorphic videos ARE 4:3 ! Are you aware about that ? I think that your problem is that you do not really understand what are your own needs.

O.K...This is the deal:

I'm using TMPGenc with the KVCD templates to encode my video...I'm trying to change the aspect ratio in the settings window and I've tried all the resolutions that the templates enables...and I even tried to change the resolutions as the source file itself...still nothing works...though I really don't think that there is any problem, and after reading your last reply I guess that there is something wrong that I am doing.

So at the bottom line I think that the information that I need is how to encode a KVCD as a widescreen...Hope I gave enuogh informatio this time...

why would u want to change the aspect ratio?

and wots the aspect ratio of your source?

1/ All KVCD templates are desinged to produce 4:3 so it's normal to not have anythign anamorphic with them

2/ VCD and SVCD does not support widescreens so just forget.
(you can still encode in anamorphic but you will have to force manually your TV each time because when you inserts a (S)VCD in a player, it switches the TV in 4:3 mode :!:)

Widescreen is a feature introduced with DVDs.

O.K...thanks...But this is the thing...I've downloaded before a couple of KVCD files which wasn't played on a fullscreen and this the thing that makes me ask the question: Is there maybe an exact resolution that I make so the movie at laest will look like an anaphormic movie?

Dialhot 07-12-2004 11:34 AM

All resolution except 352*240(288) can "look" like anamorphic. This question doesn't have any mean !

THe KVCd you DLed are just crapp issued from sources that were anamorphic and encoded "as it" insteed of retauring the correct 4:3 A/R.

Edit: are you sure that what you want is anamorphic. It seems you need "leterboxed" taht is NOT the same thing !

MasterLogi04 07-12-2004 02:46 PM

Well, I don't care as long as my movie will not be a full screen...It ruins the quality...It seems like you are a person who knows the stuff...I'll be glad if you could tell me what I need to do. :)

Dialhot 07-12-2004 04:27 PM

The problem is that as long as you don't express your whish, I can't guess it. Normally what you want (or at least what I guess you should want) is obtained by "full screen - get aspect ratio" but you said you tested them all, so nothing is sure !

So if the result is not as you want, try to find a way to express your need !

MasterLogi04 07-13-2004 08:58 AM

umm...I don't think that there is something wrong, I think I might doing something wrong...So, you said that every movie resolution can be viewed anamorphic so I'll be glad if you could tell me please, how I do it?

First decide yourslef if you need something anamorphic (4:3 with peoples streched vertically) or 16:9 (rectangular, horizontal wider than vertical, with people looking normally).
Because it is definitely NOT the same thing and after 4 post you still don't tell exatly what are your wishes.

MasterLogi04 07-13-2004 10:42 AM

O.K...because I don't know as much as you do in that stuff, I'll put it in the most brutal way: I what to know how to get a movie with "Black Stripes" at the top and at the bottom. I think you called it rectangular, horizontal wider than vertical, with people looking normally.
this is the thing. I hope I finally clear...

Okay so you need something that is "letterboxed". So it's just "4:3" set anywhere you have this choice (or "4:3 525 lines") and "fullscreen, keep aspect ratio". But I already said taht :-)

And please, if you want to see the result on the PC, use a TRUE player where you force the A/R to 4:3 and not wmp. Or better : look the result on you TV before to say it does not work ;-)

Hey! thanks very much! figured out that thing finally...It works and it's good...so...thank you. :D
