Your problem with 528 shows that your player does not support all the resolution. So you MUST test first its capabilities with the sample disc provided here :

hey man!
i'v downloaded the kvcd samples
i got 2 modes in witch the picture went to the left side of tv :
1) 352X480 - plus
2) KVCDx3 528X480 - plus
in these modes the picture is wrong
but suprisingly enough 1 mode worked fine :
KVCD 704X480 - PLUS
works like a charm !!!
all the regular modes worked fine too ...

Okay. But for your source don't use 704*480. Never enlarge a resolution, always shrink it.
For a 93 minutes generally the 544*480 is the res to use but wth a fullscreen, prefer 480*480.

Just load the 544*480 (KVCDx3) template, and change manually the resolution to 480*480.
If they are locked (greyed), right click on the setting and choose "unlock".

It's just the tool taht you are using to see the res after muxing that is wrong.
What do you use ?
(and btw, with what do you mux ?)

I'm not sure that on the sample disc there was a 480*480 sample. Was it ? You told me that all regular res were okay and 480*480 is a regular one, so it should work properly according to your tests.

No there isn't. But you missed pat of the question : what is the tool that you use to see that the result is not with the correct resolution ?
For the resolution, unfortunally you will have the choise between 352*240 and 704*480 then. And with fullscript, there is no real choice : 352*240 !
(or do the job on 2 cd in 704*480).

Maybe you should encode as MPEG-1 (at resolution 480x480) but mux and burn as SVCD, I'd suppose Pioneer's do play them. At least that's what my DV-343 needs for KVCDs to work properly.

And for the question about widescreen, yes it wil be a lot better for the final quality of the result.
Note: i have a DV-454 and it plays anything . 535 (and 343) is from the year before unfortunally.

For right/left sides that is a phenomena called "tv overscan" (that you never noticed on DVDs but is there also) and can be fixed only by using a script for the KVCD process.
For the widescreen aspect, taht is a pioneer standalone problem : they turn the TV in 16:9 on any VCD aven if it is in 4:3. You must force the 4:3 mode on the TV manualy (with the remote) or configure you standalone to ouput picture in "4:3 letterboxed".
