tmpgenc2.5 or 3 ? 3 is SSE3 optimized and is supposed to be faster on P4.

The amd 64bit is future proof and in the right setup i doubt there will much difference anyway. When win XP 64bit is released the amd will be able to take the advantge of the intels.Right now though whatever suits your budget

I don't think it would matter at those speeds - maybe 10 fps between them. Ok 10 is a lot when you encode at 20fps, but it's not when you encode at 70 fps.

I have just upgraded from a p3 850 Celeron, sdr 512 ram, G4 mx440 video to Athlon 2800+/ddr 512/radeon 9600xt.

Frame rate in mencoder went from 14 to 69, and tmpgenc went from 4 hours 40 mins for a movie to 55 mins for one the same size.

(Yes, I know you can't compare same sizes, they will encode differently, but it's still a guide, 4 1/2 hours down to 55 mins.)

So now I can watch a movie in more time than it takes to convert it LOL!!!
