Howdy,

Can anyone clue me in on how to use the KVCD notch matrix in QuEnc? I just downloaded v0.53, and it worked great for a short sample MPEG2 for standard SVCD (but it was 50 MB).

I've read in threads here that I should just check the "use KVCD notch matrix" under "Advanced Options," but that option does not appear in v0.53. Is there a special version I need to download from somewhere?

Something goin' on

As far as im aware they removed the KVCD 'notch' matrix from version 0.53 which to me was a silly move as this was quite a good encoder until they did that.

Your better of Downloading Vmesquita's FreeEnc which is based on the same Libvacodec as QuEnc.

Hi absinthe,

KVCD Notch matrix was removed from QuEnc because of some problems with trellis. As Zyphon already pointed, you can use my encoder "FreeEnc" which also uses the same library, libavcodec.

Thanks, guys

I just gave QuEnc a shot on a KVCD sample and results were real good. By the time you read this, I'll be encoding with FreeEnc! ...

Did a 90-sec sample of a TV show from AVI in two passes. Quality was okay, but I didn't apply any filters at all. I wasn't sure where to set the bitrates, so I used 1500/2500.

All in all, I'm just amazed that there's a free encoder that actually works

So, as I understand it, by default:

1 - It's an MPEG2 encoder only
and
2 - It uses the 'K' notch matrix only

(I assume that I was correct in clicking "Go" a second time to do the second pass ... it doesn't do it automatically?).

Might try a whole 90-minute movie tonight with some script filters and see how it comes out ....

Yes. avcodec does MPEG1 but I choose not to add at this time because quality is not very good.

It's default. You can change to your favorite matrix in FreeEnc.ini. Actually ou can change everything in DIKO.INI. But are you sure you want another matrix?

You missed the point. When you choose 2 pass, from 0~50% the encoder is doing the 1st pass (notice that the filesize does not grow from zero) and 50%~100% it does the second pass. So you actually did 2 pass twice (must have taken a looooog time

Nah. I'll stick with K. Just making sure. After I posted I did see the matrix set up in the .ini file.

Holy cow! Ah well, it was only a 2-minute sample, anyway. I guess I was expecting it to take a long time, too, but it was done so quick I thought I had to manually start pass 2. Silly me.

Is there a good size prediction method ... I'd like to try a whole movie.

That's the good part
No need for file prediction.
You just run Karl's Calcumatic and open your D2V file in it.
Choose your target media, video and sound options.
Click on the Calculate button and Calcumatic will give you an average bitrate figure.
Use it in FreeENC and look how close your encoded movie gets to the needed file size if you run a 2-pass encoding
Besides it's very fast!
Cheers

Ahhhhhhh, so thaaaaaaaaat's what the average bitrate figure in CalcuMatic is for. I had been using it to plug the avg. into CQMatic for TMPGEnc prediction, and I remember being confused because beyond that the number didn't seem to have any further purpose (i.e. I was wondering why it was in a whole separate tool). You never use it for TMPGEnc; you only need the CQ value from CQMatic.

So now I know . Cool! Wish I had know earlier though. I just took a stab in the dark and plugged 2500 in for max and I think 1300 or so for average. I wasn't worried about going over because my movie was only 1 hour long. In fact the MPEG2 only came out to 411 MB.

So it took quite a while to do 2 passes. Started about 9:45 p.m. and finished around 4 or 5 a.m. I used 352 x 576 PAL and just a few filters (Blockbuster x2, BlindPP, Convolution3D, Undot, TemporalSoften, and DCTFilter). Maybe the filters slowed things down a bit.

bbMPEG muxed without a hitch, and VCDEasy didn't even hiccup on it!

I'm watching it right now and I have to say it looks darn good! (especially if you consider my source material was crap ). My hat's off to the author!

(Wonder if this thing does good on DVD material .... ?)

Hi absinthe,
Yeah! We need to congratulate VMesquita for giving us FreeEnc!

Thanks VM

Now, we are conducting experiments with it for KVCD/KDVD.
For now, I must say that it is one of the best out there for KDVD.
In terms of KVCD I think we'll need to tweak it a lot untill it gives as good results as tmpgenc does.
But I'm sure we'll get there.
BTW, don't expect lots of speed even on low resolutions when using those filters you mentioned.
For instance conv3D can be a pain in the *** when talking about performance .
Cheers m8

FreeEnc forum is now open
Now we can forget about QuEnc (as it no longer supports our advanced matrix), and focus on the advanced features of FreeEnc
The new forum is here: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=85
