DVD2AVI taking 5 to 6 hours to make a project...help!

DVD2AVI taking 5 to 6 hours to make a project all of the sudden. I have been using 1.76 and all was fine , it used to take about 5 minutes or so to create a project and now for no reason I can see it takes hours! I have tried ALL versions out there to see if any would be different but they all act the same now...any help please...

Bombero0437 09-19-2004 08:00 PM

anyone?...

even a theory would help.....

fabrice 09-19-2004 11:51 PM

Here is my theory: disk fragmentation?

As DVD2AVI has to read all vobs files, it could last a very long time if the vobs are spread alll over the disk...

try to execute Windwows defragmenter... (What OS are you using?)

My personnal opinion : you changed something in the options.
Can you check them all ?

Verify also the DMA status of your disk. See there :

hi Bombero
did you ripped the dvd or copy to HDD?
and what is your cpu and mem size?

Bombero0437 09-20-2004 06:26 AM

thanx for answering,

I checked the settings in DVD2AVI and they all seem to be as normal, I also checked to make sure that the drives are using DMA and not PIO mode, I have WinXP by the way... so now I am going to defrag the drives and see if it was something that simple...

I ripped the DVD to the hard drive using DVD DeCrypter as I always do, should I also try another program like smart ripper? could the way it was ripped be a problem?

(AMD 1.8 MHz & 512 DDR Ram)

Hi Bombero,
Is it only DVD2AVI that is working slowly or did you see other applications going very slowly too?
I ask this because there was a Microsoft XP patch that made the whole PC go veeery slow.
Cheers

Bombero0437 09-20-2004 04:56 PM

I had just upgraded to xp service pak-2 recently and most all of my apps are running in slow motion....$$&$^_!

rds_correia 09-20-2004 05:37 PM

Hey Bombero :),
Then how come you're complaining about DVD2AVI??? :)
Just try to uninstall SP2 (is it possible?)
Otherwise it will be difficult to aid you.
Cheers

Bombero...back to 98se like i use! and forget that problems!

Bombero0437 09-20-2004 07:48 PM

lol im not ready to downgrade to 98se just yet......jorel

i defraged all the drives, got rid of service pak-2 and still have the same problems..(the reason i was asking about DVD2AVI is at the time it was the only program i had used , so i thought the problem was there) anyway, i think now maybe a clean install of windows (XP) then if that dont do it, maybe my motherboard and-or CPU are taking a dump on me.......

thanx everyone for the help.......Bombero

jorel 09-20-2004 08:51 PM

all right my friend.

seems a joke but i'm really with 98se!

try install XP again over you're using first and see what happens.
if work, you don't loose your adjusts and programs that are running...
if don't , then you format and do a fresh install....your choice! :)

Zyphon 09-21-2004 01:40 AM

No offense to you jorel my friend but 98se sucks in this day and age.

I used to use it and was quite happy with it until XP Pro came out.

XP Pro is so much more stable and no more constant blue screens of death.

98se was good in it's day and I was a die hard fan of it until I was finally persuaded to change to XP Pro and I haven't looked back since. No more keep wiping my Hard Disk every couple of months and re-installing I have had my XP Pro set up for almost a year without any problems.

My advice to Bombero is to not install SP2 for XP. The auto update kept informing me of the SP2 update and I know that it caused many problems with the tools we use so I told it to ignore the update and stuck with SP1.

My advice would be to take jorel's advice. Wipe the machine re-install XP and just upgrade to SP1 and not SP2. :)

Zyphon
few minutes after your post,i was posting a answer and my pc.....

kaboon! :grenade: FREEZE LIKE A PHOTO! 8O 8O
was the second time, see the reason:
the cooler of the cpu is too big and heavy and sometimes remove the cpu giving bad contact in the pins!
then was needed to open the pc,remove lots, put all agian, and remove the dust inside. was needed long time cos i have amplifiers and lots of things plugged in pc.
when all was ok a freinc call me: i need you ati card to record some vhs tapes. i can send my nvidea for you....is possible?
and i: of course.......and i remove all again! :bawl:

the worse: the cd with the nvidea drives is damaged and i only can work with 16 colors....... is "wonderfull" here!

well,back to topic:
why i still with 98se?
first: i have ghost images with all windows systems: 98se,ME,2k and XP.
all that i have in the pc is programs to do kvcds, kdvds and some for audio convertions.
i don' use office, and things like this.
my HDD master have 60GB and the c partition with 8GB and the remainder in D.......i have another HDD with 40GB for backups and it's outside the pc.
 i have only 1,16Gb used with all that i need in C: with win98se
everything working perfect....no bugs....no errors.
if i install XP,it will need more 2 GB to do the same..means: more than 4 Gb to give me the same performance.only the "pagefile, sys" of XP,have more than 720Gb! 8O
this for me is unaceptable!!!
second reason: as i posted.....my friend need my ati card that only work in 98se or ME.this card show better quality than the new studio 9.and my ati can work in ntsc,pal-g and pal-m(Brasil color system) and the new studio9 and lots more can't capture in pal-m.
then i still using for that reson : my ati card that is wonderfull !

 my 98se don't break..i only do ghost images every weak with atualizations and to be safed.works like a charm.

but your right in some points:
of course that in next future i will change to XP cos some programs don't will work in 98se.
but i'm still working and my pc is faster with 98 than with XP!
if all you use run in 98,change it and get performance....the pc runs faster :!:

@Bombero0437

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is very likely the source of your troubles.
I had some programs either act very funny or not run at all. I had to
do a clean install of XP and use service pack 1b. (curse M$). Now it's
back to normal. Jorel has a good point about 98SE. I used it and it
can be configured to be stable, at least for creating KVCD backups. :)
