VirtualDub: Save As or Build to save video?

Most programs you load a source file, make some changes to it and then do a Save As.. to create a version of the source. Or sometime there's a 'Build' button.

I can't grok what to do once I've loaded an .AVS file into Virtual Dub to create a new compressed video file. Where do you tell it to Save As.. or 'Build' or something...

I'm sure I'm missing something very basic here.

I don't know VirtualDub, but VirtualDubMod, menu, file, save as avi (or F7 key).

As in Save As AVI?

But does that invoke the Avisynth parameters from the .AVS file I opened?

If you opened an avs script, video arrive to VDM frameserved, this is, not original video but with all avisynth filters applied. Anyway, take in account following: my VDM version has an option in menu, file, open video film via avisynth, and maybe you have to use this option when open your avs script.

Not needed.

Virtualdub can open avs file but it cannot creates them automatically, like virtualdubmod does when you use the "open via avisynth" option.

Why wouldn't it? have you tried?

Lumsmore 09-23-2004 07:06 AM

Here's what I have tried

1. I've created a simple .AVS script to select a small, 2 min section of the video.
2. Next I'm trying to add an audio offset because the audio isn't in synch. I'm trying to find the right value for the offset. But VirtualDub doesn't play the video smoothly, so I tried to the save as AVI option. But when I then played this new .AVI file in RealPlayer, it played all jerky as well.

That's how this all started...

use some sort of compression (video-->compression) when saving your file (also for audio)

the bitrate of uncompressed audio + video (RGB) is extremely high...

most of the times AVS scripts play jerky because of the filtering used.

If I may sugest something:
-install ffdshow with makeavis
-create fake avi from your avs
-open it (avi) in VD (do not forget to enable avisynth decompresion in vfw)
-add youre audio stream
-save with direct stream copy

You will obtain small avi file playable in any media player. (small=almost audio track size)

PS: Use some more than RealPlayer  I sugest MediaPlayerClassic

There is ABSOLUTLYT no need to do that !

Virtualdub reads without any problem avs scripts !

Why adding difficulty with a directshow filter and a false avi ?

Lumsmore 09-23-2004 07:49 PM

Right on! Got it!

Thanks for everyone's input. AND I learned a bit more about this magical world of working with digial video.

I know it does, I didn't wrote it doesn't , but this way he can create draft avi file to test proper audio delay. Only this purpose.
