another way of shrinking the file without reencoding?
 

I encoded a movie at too high a bitrate and it came out to 2.5 gb. I want it to be 1.6 gb so I thought I could use a transcoder to slim it down. I tried ReMpeg and man this thing is slooooooooow !!! It's been 6 hours already and its 85% done. Is there another way of shrinking the file without reencoding?

I use dvd shrink 3.1 to shrink dvd files but I can't find where it will allow .m2v /.mpv files as input :?:

only after author you files you can use shrink friendall.
shrink only works with dvd structures!
and use 3.2 version choosing one of the AEC options and deep analysis.

The frame from DVD Shrink looks almost identical to the original VOB IMHO. Interesting...

yes my friend.
my taste to use dvdshrink compression and of course depend of the movie and how much action he have is:

from ~70% to 99%....DVDShrink
from - 45% to 70%...CCE with kvcd notch matrix and (surprise)
:arrow: without any filter or resize in the script...only the source! 8O
take a look and compare!

what i remember:
last year,one of our friends told me that was encoding without filters and that got good results.....or was Boulder or was ink i'm doubt!

this can give big and long discutions but nothing is better than tests....i still have the vobs and i can send cutting that vobs from that tests or you can do your own test.
was a big surprise for me the results without filters but the winner still the kvcd notch matrix that give me good compression and i can' t see differences without zoom in the pictures or in the player in pc.
in the comparing the source, the dvdshrink at 70% and from CCE with kvcd notch at 70% i can' t see differences!
see that the pictures posted are in full size 720x480(standard-M).
was a hard and long test! :wink:

I also did some testings on a "no compromise" backup of my StarWars Boxset.

Movie Only with AC3s and Subtitles and selfmade Menue (as I was in the mood ;-) )

Origin was a one movie Angle1 reauthored- non compressed VIDEO_TS Folder via ShrinkDVD.

- 1. I went further in Shrink reauthor mode, choosed compression automatic and did set in Quality Enhancements "sharp" and "deep analysis" - demuxing the resulted VOBs and reauthored a new DVD using individual Menues etc.
- 2. Used the non compressed via Shrink "reauthored" VIDEO_TS to treat by DVDrebuilder to compare the CCE result.
- 3. Used mencoder (PeterCheats patch)

Shrink and CCE did look almost the same. On some very few mega complex scenes CCE resulted in some minimal blocks, ... but on the other hand Shrink resulted in diff. Scenes in some minimal Blocks. So the average Quality of both was nearly the same. Even a bit better was the result of mencoder where I did stuck to and used these 4 reencodings (4 DVDs) to author my one movie-DVD backups.

On all I just used "undot().Temporalsoften(1,3,5,5,2)" thats all and totally enough for that SW Box Set PAL version.

Ok, now I've made a copy of "Star Wars Episode V: A New Hope" PAL with DVD Shrink 3.2 and I used deep analysis and AEC options (Sharp=Default). And what can I say -> Amazing!
I also made some frame comparing and honestly it's not easy to tell them apart. Even though I compressed the whole DVD and the compression was about 52%. Unbelievable but true. :D

for my taste i do the same like you but changing the passes:

we have to use an source size as reference.......8Gb size of the source.
i don't like original menus. the kdvd autoplay and only when i need or want, i call for it.
i don't like the menu first waiting decisions, the decisions was encoded like i choosed...only my taste ...i don't like to start with menus! (this is the real reason why i don't use dvd-rb)
than...

1- encode that 8Gb source to get 6Gb (audio without re encode)

2- author in tmpgencdvdauthor to build menu/chapters

3- transcode the resulting author in shrink to dvd media size.

following that steps i got better results than doing differents steps.
means:
8Gb encoded to 6Gb and author, then tanscode to kdvd media size =
less looses than others options!

i did long tests using the hulk as source in all possibles variations.
..that was the best option that give less looses.
it's cool for my taste :!:

Rempeg is a very old software.
It's not optimized with the current state of newer compilers and CPU specific instructions.

For shrinking m2v files you can use Rejig - search doom9 for download.

Or DVDLAB PRo ! It has it's own recoder that can be used before to author the DVD. I didn't test it a lot so be carefull.
