Has anyone futzed around with encoding smaller files 45-55 into KVCD. I personally don't mind the disc switch, and the quality with the higher CQs is amazing, but it seems I'm always getting less than optimal file size.

Has anyone done tests with what CQ settings to use to get 800 Meg files with 45-55 minute files. Currently, at a CQ of 86, I'm getting about 670, but upping the CQ by 4 doesn't give me anywhere near 100 Megs more.

Hi DrC:

Once you get to a point, where an increase in CQ makes no change to the file size, means that TMPEG has no need to increase the quality because it's already providing the maximum quality for the combinations of GOP, MIN, and MAX bitrate.

So for this particular film you're encoding, if you want to increase the file size, the only parameter that you can change would be the MAX bitrate.

And even that might not increase the file size too much if there's not enough action in the movie.

That's like my Stargate episodes, that I capture every week, I use CQ=82 and I get 45 minutes in about 400MB after editing and removing the commercials.
