http://www.ympeg.com/download.htm

Code:
Revision History

2.1b
bullet	Added support for configuration auto saving [Registered version only]
bullet	Added feature for auto incrementing file name in order to create unique file name.
bullet	Both these feature together allows using YMPEG in batch job

KVCD Notch working like a champ. Both in MPEG-1 and MPEG-2
Also MIN and MAX bitrate seems to now be correctly maintained.
I haven't experienced anymore quantization faults, when using a very low MQuant value (1 or 2), so it seems that it's been fixed.
File size also seems to be right on the nose, so average bitrate is followed quite accurately.

Hi guys,
Well, my 1st tests with YMPEG are not very good
Maybe I'm doing something wrong with the encoding options but the quality is poor even choosing the KVCD matrix and setting the KVCD check box.
Also the encoding speed is very slow.
I'm sure I will be able to improve the quality because it's really very poor.
Otherwise the encoder would suck which is obviously unlikely since I've heard nice comments on it earlier.
I set min=150 avg=1700 max=8000.
Any comments from your tests guys?
Cheers

Hi Rui,

The test I made was MIN 300, AVG 800, MAX 2,500.
The results are pretty good, although I agree that it's very slow, compared to ffmpeg/libavcodec based encoders.
But the produced mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 are fully compliant, without glitches or spikes, which is not the case with the other Codecs.
Are you using the latest version, 2.1c

@kwag

Hi!
Yes, I also tried out YMPEG (2.1c) and it must have been the blockiest movie I've ever seen ! What settings did you use to get a good result?

Thanks for the info guys this is very interesting, I nearly bought this tool but now accoring to your findings I may hold off for a while until quality/speed can be improved.

Mind you having said that I since I bought my DVD-Burner I rarely do KVCD and mainly do KDVD so I guess i'll leave this program alone.

To solve the blocky image in ympeg you must put min:300000 average(something like 2300000 or what you want) and maximum:9800000. I had the same problem but now it works.

Some of YMPEG default settings issues are resolved in latest version 2.4.

Tested this version and blocky as hell (704x576 at 1312 kbps)!
could be because of kvcd matrix?

IMO, 1312 kbps is definately low for 704x576 resolution (for most video content).

Anyway, Can you send your YMPEG settings file to support@ympeg.com

Hi,

I know it's low, but I was comparing different encoder, and ympeg was the worst... With all others, the video was watchable, but with ympeg, it was impossible.
all the video is this kind of images:

with NuEnc, I got this kind of image, with the same bitrate:
.
I can send my setting to this email, but I think it could of general interest, don't you?

I do endorse fabrice´s statements relatively to NuEnc encoder. I´ve done some encodings with last one in cq mode in AVI (anime, captured from satellite) and the results were great! No blocky at all.

Cheers,

appreciate your comments and experiments. I could be wrong, but morever this looks like a settings problem. We will investigate and address this on priority. However, as you can understand it is very difficult to comment without knowing details. It will be a great help if you can send settings file and if possible, both clips(encoded by YMPEG and nuenc).

Thanks a lot in advance.

I'm sure it's a settings problem!
I just desinstalled/reinstalled ympeg to get default values, changes my video type (PAL-16/9), GOP (15) and avegrage/max bitrate.

Here are the parameters:

Well: I have to say that I never let ympeg encode all the sample, because it's damn slow in my system (because of virtualdub stopping the thread very often, with "possible livelock"), so I'll let him go 'till the end, and send you both clips.

Oops, there is a problem in bitrate values you have entered. YMPEG takes all bitrate values in bps and not in kbps. For example, you MUST enter 1312000 and not 1312.

This could also be a reason for it being slow on your system as it keeps on trying to meet bitrate you specified.

I will look forward to your clips after you correct this.

Regards,
Yusuf

Hi,

After changing the bitrates, ympeg is a lot better! Thanks Yusuf
The static/semi-static images are better than nuenc, and ympeg is not so slow than before.

There is only a problem, which is parameter related, I think: almost at the end of the movie, there is a action scene which is very blocky.
I think it's because the bitrate is almost linear (except at the beginning), but the Q not... (according to BV). So static scene have high bitrate, but action scene, not.
I'm actually playing with Reaction parameter, to see if it change something, but I think a CQ mode could be the key for low bitrate encoding...
