I tryed to encode some MPEG-4 source using the SPP deblocking in FFdshow.
(i also little sharpening, to make the result less blurry)

AWESOME !!!

Better than any "optimal script" !!! (and probably faster due to the FFDshow optimized build...)

Just me ?

I don't think so, I have very good result with some filters for playback so I guess something can be done or encoding. But I didn't have any second to try and test.

@ Patchworks

How did u use ffdshow for that comparison? Via directshowsource() or its new avisynth filter-wrapper capabilities (filter call in the script)?

I posted the reply yesterday...

The latest FFDshow release supports VfW decoding...

Anyway i'll try the avisynth filter-wrapper capabilities...

Well a proper vfw decoding is already supported in ffdshow since both engines (ffdshow/ffvfw) have been merged.

BUT! Does your reply mean that finally also the filtering within the vfw-decoder of ffdshow works properly? That would be great as to me it seemed that in the past the vfw engine of ffdshow supported filtering but didnt really applied it to the stream.

PS: Be shure u use the generic build from sourceforge as the avisynth section withn the filtering part of ffdshow doesnt work on SSE or SSE2 specific builds

Well... i can't bet on it, but seems that works. I tried to check the difference between the video played by MPC -dshow- and the preview in TMPGEnc -vfw- and seems identical...

Anyway, more feedback by someone other would be really apreciated !

Jost for fun: do you know Celtic Druid's builds ?

Preview in tmpgenc is in RGB24, so it's weird to find it identical to what MPC displays

I just want to tell something as just tested SPP deblocking because I never tried it before. I justr played an avi and activated the the SPP deblocking, with Soft Threshold and nothing else.

It's not awesome, it's awfull

You obviously have a different situation in your testing process because SPP (at least at playback time) does a heavy blur

Phil,

there are several adjustments and deblocking algorhythms in ffdshow.
Also try an actual build:

(from celtic druid ..... and watch the ffdshow #2 thread at doom9)

or the latest "GENERIC" Build on sourceforge (not sse or sse2 specifics as the avisynth section wont work on these)

"SPP deblocking" is one of the debloking mode featured by ffdshow and it does not have any settings beside a checkbox to activate it and a slider to adjust the level of deblocking (from 1 to 6, like all others deblocking mode, and correspoding also to the value you can give to "cpu=" in mpeg2source or blindPP).

I tried the the last version you indicated. And that's the same.
Try it, you will see !

Play an avi, uncheck all settings int he ffdhow config pad, select only "posprocessing" and "SPP" (with or without '"Soft Threshold").
That blurs more than a "Blur(1.5)" in avisynth

Yep, SPP deblocking softens the image quite a bit. It's also very CPU hungry.

I don't know if there are any big differences between mplayer's and Nic's PP, does anyone have any knowledge?

Don't take this bad but I mean my words : the filter BLURS, it does not soften "a bit".

I can try to do snapshots if you want to see (even if it's difficult to do has I'm using it during playback, not encoding )

Quite a bit == much Softening, blurring, pretty much the same thing. I did try SPP deblocking once with a blocky clip and sure wasn't happy with the results. If I wanted to remove blocks and details, I'd use eDeen

Try deselect "Soft Threshold" and add some sharpening (i use xsharp)

I'd unselected and that is exactly the same. And about using sharpening... as Boulder told, the problem in not in the softening only, the problem is that SPP removes all details ! Using sharpen after that won't restore them.

If you want to try something very efficient, not CPU hungry, and that doesn't whash all the details, try "Denoise3D" in the "Blur and NR" tab.
