Does the source bitrate have an impact on the amount of absolute compression possible

Does the source bitrate have an impact on the amount of absolute compression possible??

Currently I record TV programs on my hard drive recorder at the highest quality, then burn them onto DVD at a lower quality so the whole thing fits on one DVD (about 2 hours worth)

I then rip the DVD to my PC edit out the crap and reencode them using the KDVD template for CCE.

So far I have managed to get about 4.5 hours worth on a DVD at reasonable quality with the half D1 template.

Would I have better results if my source bitrate was higher??
i.e. split the show over 2 DVD

It doesn't have a direct effect on compressibility. The idea is that the final quality is best when your source is as good as possible.

So there is no point in recording my stuff at a higher quality and trying to compress it more??

What I'm saying is that you should always try to get as good quality source as possible regardless of what you are going to do with it. You'll have to answer your question yourself: does the more compressed video look good to your eyes?

Well I am going to test that out and see what happens.

I just wanted to see if I was heading down the right path.
